Raymarine e-80 chart plotter keeps rebooting

Two weeks ago - The E-80 display would come up and display the chart but would then reboot itself. This happend most of the morning, with each reboot the e-80 would stay up a little longer. By noon it stayed up running the rest of the day.

Yesterday - When powering up the E-80 the logo screen comes up but that is it. It then reboots itself over and over, never makes it past the logo screen.

I have a E-80 multifunction display and all of a sudden once is hooked to power it starts itself and the initial white screen appears flashing every second. The keys are not jammed ( it does it without the faceplate) and by holding the second key when powering up it still flashes the white screen. I will appreciate any help.

We have the same problem with the e120 chart plotter, it keeps powering off, then powering on all of its own accord.  We have monitored the power in and it is steady, we have disconnected the radar, which we though might have been the culprit but the problem keeps coming back, we have sent one screen back to Raymarine had it checked out, and still it comes back.  We are now embarking on a full review of all the seatalk and instruments  but I just can't think why that would trigger the plotter to power down and reboot.  Anyone got any suggestions?

If you are experiencing problems with your C70, C80, C120, E80 or E120 display resetting itself, or randomly turning itself off, there are 2 troubleshooting procedures that may resolve the issue:
1. Ensure that none of the buttons are stuck under the edge of the display's front fascia.
When the Multifunction Display is first installed, or any time after the front fascia has been removed, it is very easy to get the edge of one or more of the rubber buttons trapped under the edge of the plastic fascia. This is particularly prone to happening if the snaps that secure the fascia to the display are not fully engaged around both the outside perimeter of the fascia, and the insider edge surrounding the LCD display.

E-Series display with soft key trapped under fascia.
You can free the buttons from under the edge of the fascia by applying pressure to them with a fingertip, and rotating your fingertip in a circular motion. When the button is properly through the fascia it should sit centered within its hole, and you should feel a positive "click" of the internal switch when pressing and depressing each button. If trapped buttons were found, releasing them will return the display to normal operation.
2. Reset the display.
Your display may require a reset which will erase any stored waypoints, routes and tracks.
If your MFD's menus are accessible:

Backup your personal data CompactFlash memory card. Please see Answer #1145, Backing up waypoint, routes and tracks on C and E-Series for complete instructions.
Once your data is backed up you can reset the display using this procedure:

  1. If your MFD's menus are accessible, perform a "Settings and Data" reset from the System Setup menu. Press the MENU key, then scroll down to the "System Setup" option, and toggle the track pad right.
  2. Scroll down to the "Settings and Data Reset" option and toggle the track pad right.
  3. Under the word "Factory Reset?" press the softkey corresponding to YES. The display will restart momentarily.
  4. The display should reboot into normal operating mode.
If your MFD's menus are not accessible:
You will not be able to backup your personal data. We can reset the display though using this procedure:
  1. Press and hold down the first soft key (next to the power button.)
  2. Keep holding the soft key down while the display reboots. A "Factory Reset" countdown will be displayed. Keep holding the first soft key until the countdown is complete.
  3. The display should reboot into normal operating mode.
Once your display has returned to normal operation you should check its operating software version, and upgrade to the latest version (if applicable.) The latest update for your model is 3.31. It will be displayed on the message that appears during start up. This is an important update because changes were made to the WAAS satellites and your E80 will not recognise the satellites without this update. Click this link to download the update: Raymarine V3.31 update.

I have a C80 which had this cycling problem where it prevented a manual interrupt. I tried leaving the power applied to the device for 10 - 12 hours at which the cycling process halted and permitted manual control

Had the rebooting problem with my E120 - was extremely annyoing, since it would reboot out of the blue when underway - both screens independantly sometimes.
What solved it after many hours was simple: i had to turn off the "storm track" feature on my Sirius satellite weather on each screen and each page setting. Hate it.
Hope it solves your issues too.

I have problems with my plotter Raymarine Rc 435 chart plotter. This plotter can not location my ship to do.What is problems?

Be sure there isn't any aluminum in close proximity to your GPS antenna, or that your antenna is not to close to other powerful electronics. Aluminium reflects electromagnetic signals and other electronics emit EM fields as well causing disruption of your GPS signal reaching your antenna.

My C-70 boots up with lines in it, can not see display at all. I bump the display and reboot and it works, I have checked and cleaned all cables. Don't want to get off shore and get let down.

I recognize the problem. It mostly occurs when the plotter is exposed to moist during some days. The contactstrip which connects the computer to the screen gets moist and does not conduct in an optimal way. The result is a non readable screen with stripes,

The solution is simple: press on the edges of the screen and the contact is re-established.And next time when you moor the ship, don't put the cover over the plotter till it is dry :-)

My Raymarine C80 CHart plotter won't load.

Check to see if this is a power issue by connecting to shore power and fully charging your batteries overnight with instruments off. While still connected to shore power, with batteries fully charged, turn on C80 navigation system. If the loading screen comes on and does not reset, then try holding down the button immediately to the right of the red power button for at least 3 seconds to see if the system re-boots.

Make absolutely sure that all of the buttons are clear (not stuck). After that, begin by unplugging any external interfaces (including the chart card) one by one to determine if one of those is the culprit.

Hi Matt,

There is a feature in these chartplotters called "Plotter Mode" that is often misunderstood and causes the exact problem you describe.

Press menu.....chart setup.....and scroll to the bottom until you see Plotter Mode in the list of options. It should be set in the OFF position.

If you have more than one display networked onboard check the setting in each one invividually.

What Plotter Mode does is allows the chartplotter system to access range scales not supported on the chart. It is not normally used for map-based navigation but more so for chartless electronic plotting (it can display routes, waypoints and track-recorder breadcrumbs.) open-ocean cruising, or for ultra-precise GPS operations (like a precision anchor drop, finding a very specific location etc. When plotter mode is on you can zoom in to a very, very small working area. The indicator it is enable is the cross-hatch background on the screen, the lack of map information, and the NO CHART DATA watermark on the screen.
