Aspire 1690 wireless connection problems

My laptop harddrive recently died and when a new one was installed I did not get all my old programs back. I downloaded Acer's recovery disk for the Aspire 1690 for windows xp and ran it on my laptop. As far as I know everything loaded as it should. However I still cannot connect via wireless. No problems using a cord but the wireless has me stumped. I have tried many combinations of Network Authentication being Shared or Open or WPA or WPA-PSK but nothing works so far. Does anyone know what the preferred or default selections are under "Association"? Should I enable IEEE 802.1x authentication? (I have tried it but maybe not in conjunction with the right other combinations.....). A couple of times I have done something almost right...I was informed that I was connected but I wasn't. When I tried to do something I was told that I would lose my connection if I disconnected but since I was also told (at the top of the window) that I was not connected I didn't see how that would matter.
Does any of this ring a bell with anyone. Grateful for any advice.

I am not sure what we are talking about (sorry) but it could be that you mean the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 220BG Network Connection which is the only thing I see listed under the Device Manager that might be referring to a wireless card.
By the way I also see that I have these other network adapters listed: 1394 NEt Adapter; Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet; and MAC Bridge Miniport. Is the latter something that should be on a PC?
    Thanks for your continued thoughts...

What sort of wireless card does that carry. Sometimes it's easier to get the right drivers from that website, instead of through the OEM computer folks.

Bruce, we can handle this with a shared screen session, if you can access the net from the computer you're attempting to fixya. send a note to my contact info on my profile, if you want this to happen

Just had new harddrive installed on laptop, now the wireless and blue tooth buttons on the front wont come on. any ideas please

Hello,

the problem could be in not turning on bluetooth nor wireless. As you have installed new hardrive, you have probably changed the system, so you need the drivers for your laptop.

Does everyting else work fine like before? In case not, you need the drivers(check this link)
In case yes, just try to activate either bluetooth or wireless like you have done it with old harddrive, and let me know.

this is pretty easy, you must remove the encryption(password) code from your wireless profile in your windows and write it again correctly, this happens due to many reasons, but it will finally work.

Wireless connection problem

Hi,
if you are sure you didn't changed the password on the wifi router and it stopped working itself try restoring the system to the date it was working fine, but little caution all the settings/ programs installed after the restore date will be lost

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
choose the date ie. bold and on which it was working fine and follow instructions

if you think the info given by me was helpful please do rate me

Acer Aspire 1690 cooling problem whit windows vista

Windows Vista is a very demanding Operating system when it comes to system resources and it doesnt come as a shock to hear that you computer runs warmly, If you werent experiencing any problems when you had windows XP installed, I would suggest downgrading to Window XP, otherwise wait for October 22 and purchase a genuine copy of Windows 7 and use that.
