Question about Video Game Consoles & Games

1 Answer

Hi, I have a mod chipped satin silver slimline Playstaion 2 (SCPH-70002). Recently the screen has 'dropped'. By this I mean, whether playing games or D.V.D.s, there is a huge black horizontal bar at the top of the screen. All my screen settings and PS2 settings are unaltered from when I first had the mod-chip installed by a professional, and it was perfect for ages after having it installed. Occasionally I do get, by pure luck, some sort of menu/settings screen that pops up when first inserting a disc (I can only describe the look of this screen as circa Commodore 64), but although I can scroll up and down through the categories, am unable to actually alter the X and Y settings, which I think is what needs to be done. Please help if you can, as would hate to dispose of this unit, which is what I am close to doing as never use it now in this state. Thank you.

I have used the PS2 on numerous televisions, presently it's just hooked up to a 4:3 68cm CRT. I have also tried it on a JVC 76cm 16:9 CRT flatscreen widescreen (about two years old which I just recently sold) and my current unit, a 109cm/42" Samsung rear projection widescreen, 1080i high definition ready, approximately 3 years old (model number SP43W6). I have used it on other tv's too with no issues. I am positive it is the Playstation 2 at fault, and am thinking the addition of the mod chip is to blame ? B.T.W., it's a 'Matrix' mod chip, and I turned it on (unloaded) right now and just noticed, aside from the Matrix logo (with the 'i' upside down), that the version number that used to be displayed on this screen has disappeared..............????

    Hi again,

The mod chip was not from SONY, from a registered business (as far as I know) here in Brisbane, Australia. It was an ACTUAL shop, so assumed it was all above board, but obviously having my doubts now....the guy supplied and installed the mod chip.

I am a bit confused though when you ask
", where did you get this download from?" - Which download are you referring to ?

Getting close to bin day here - (in Homer Simpson voice)

B.T.W..can you please tell me (if you know), if the fee (I think it was around US$13.99) I paid for Fixya's service is a one off fee per problem. In other words, assuming I only pursue this issue with my PS2 until I 'Accept' any possible responses and/or solutions, will I only be charged the initial fee of $US13.99 ????

You are suffering from video screen offset disease..a rare and fortunately non communicable variety of the old technology syndrome..

actually, the fix on this is in the innards of the box.

you are almost on it, with the X/Y coordinate settings, however, those are determined by the raster scanning technology. If the beam is hitting the screen, and the screen is unhappy, you'll see that show up. Since the rest of the monitor appears to be functioning, then you can be almost certain that it's not the signal that's amiss, even though those can be offset over time.

My thinking suggests you have a bad screen, and if my recollection is also correct, that unit is integrated, so there's no way to port to a new monitor , right?

perhaps you can convey the type of 'screen' you are using with this PS2?

oy vey..sounds like not having version means one of two things.

    A. It's a beta release(that would be a good thing)

    B. It's a questionably legal version(that would be a bad thing).

Other option is that it's one of those old movie formats, where the top and bottom of the screen are blacked out(that's humor).., where did you get this download from?

and the mod chip, was that from sony or on the grey market.

this is starting to get more clear.

remember me fondly when you decide who's Fixingya, baby(in classic Telly Savalas mode, with lolipop firmly in cheek).

    More later?

I have Sony play station 2 model SCPH 75004 which is failing to play PS1 DVD and CDs. I hear it requires a mod chip. Where can I get the mod chip and how is it installed to the PS2.

ruben, the PS1 is the only system created with the capability of adding a mod chip. When they first came out, the PS1Generation 1(PSX)could play burned games and DVD's. Sony discovered that it created an issue with the excessive wear of the cd drive, so they recalled the system. Then they re-released it and it couldn't play DVD's anymore. The PS2 could already play DVD so it has no mod chip function.

Fake cds

In order to play copied games, you will first have to mod your PS2. To avoid piracy, much of the necessary info on the original disc will be omitted during the copy phase. When you "mod" or put in a new chip, The PS2 can now bi-pass this info and continue to the game. Regardless of the type of PS2 you have, you must put in a mod chip to read back-ups.

Mod chip ps2 slim SCPH-75004SS

I don't really think I can find any info. on that. I would suggest calling or visiting the person/company that installed the mod-chip. I wouldn't call sony playstation because downloading games for the ps2 can sometimes be illegal.

Hi gollywog,

The laser not moving sounds like the connection from the motor that moves the laser to the motherboard has become dsiconected. You can usually get movement of the laser, and the only reason is something is wrong with the motor or its connection to the motherboard.
