Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Cutlery is cloudy and dirty, some food is dried onto knives and forks. Cups and glasses are cloudy and not clean on inside. Coffee or tea stains are not removed. Plates and soup bowls seem OK , and water is draining properly. We have tried with less soap, more soap, gels, tablets and powders but to no avail. The dishwasher does not clean dishes etc, as as it once did. There doesn't appear to be any problem with the 'cycle'. The machine is about nine or ten years old, and has run fine until very recently. We can find no way of 'cleaning' filters or removing impellers to check for gunk build up. The Model # is MDB6000AWW Serial # 17590140UY Thank you for any suggestions you can provide

My dishwasher is leaving a white film on the plates and silverware. I've tried different rinse aides and detergents, but it isn't helping. The water is hot and the bottom sprayer is definitely working. I can't tell if the top one is or not. It's only 4 years old. It doesn't seem to leave any film on the dishes that are placed on the top rack.

Don't know much about Dishwashers but have you tried a descaler.
Is the water spraying out as normal.
Is the water actually getting hot, could be a heater element problem.

If you look here you may get some other ideas just by looking at the parts and diagrams. Copy the whole link and paste in to your browsers address bar.

Glasses and frying pans not clean at end of cycle. Residue on glasses and cups, food particles on frying pans.

it's generally not a good idea to put really greasy items in a dishwasher along with relatively clean items such as glassware and plates and cutlery, as most recent good quality dishwashers come with a soil sensor that ends the wash cycle once the dishes appear clean, and all the grease from your frying pan will cause the soil sensor to take longer to detect clean water.

Built in machine - top shelf only - cups tea-stained, dried on particles of food

Check that the arm outlet jets at the trailing end of the arms are not blocked with food particles and other solid matter. This often happens and the arm is unable to turn because the water jet that is supposed to drive the arm does not have the force to rotate it.

Our dishwasher is only 4 months old. Sometimes there will be small particles of food left on some of the plates. Also when we wash glasses in this machine they are cloudy or dirty looking.

Hello,
There are several reasons that the food can be left on the plates. If the washer filter is plugged (partially) then the food particles can remain in the tub and be re-deposited. This can also happen with a dirty sump. According to the specs, your filter is self cleaning, and has a food disposer. The link to your machine is here:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02213742000P

I think, in your case, a good cleaning would help. When the disposer isn't working well, the screen can be coated, and needs to be cleaned to be efficient. Your manual, accessible from the link above, (then select specifications, scroll down to another link) recommends a vinegar wash and is described there.
For heavy duty cleaning, you can (in this order): Add 1/2 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and 2 cups of vinegar. Spread the ingredients around the screen, one at a time, at the bottom of the tub. It will begin to foam. When it has quit foaming, add 2 cups of bleach, and run a hot cycle (Pre-heat the water by running the hot water faucet closest to the dishwasher until hot).
Best regards, --W/D--

If you have hard water, glasses can look spotted and cloudy even after cleaning. Sometimes changing the dishwasher detergent can help. The easiest solution to clearing up glasses that start to look cloudy is to add some vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher before you start a cycle. Simply add 1/4 of white vinegar and it will clear up your glasses very well.
You should see marked improvement after the first time you do this. If they are not crystal clear then simply repeat the process until all of the cloudiness is gone. In fact I recommend to using a little vinegar in each cycle to maintain the clarity of the glass.

Note: you can pre-test this by rubbing some vinegar on an individual glass with a cloth. If you cannot remove the cloudiness by soaking it and rubbing vinegar on it then it is possible that the glass is etched due to harsh or cheap dishwasher detergent and vinegar will not solve the problem.

Hard water stains are easily taken care of with the help of vinegar. Add 1/4 vinegar to the cycle when you start it and it will help to remove spots and cloudiness.
As for food residue you might check your filters and water pressure.

Try cleaning the machine by adding white vinegar to the wash water (before the water-fill procedure finishes). Put your stained dishes and cutlery in with the wash to remove the hard water deposits. The combination of salt and rinse aid may have helped cause this problem. Hope this helps!

Glasses dirty looking and cloudy after wash cycle.

If there is not enough water, the dishes will not get cleaned. This could be caused by a partially closed water shut-off valve (located under the sink), or a faulty dishwasher water valve (located at the bottom of the dishwasher, behind the kick panel, on either side).

Also, There is usually two, sometimes three spray arms in a dishwasher. Make sure there is no debris blocking the holes inside each spray arm.

**Water temperature Note***

To get the best results, the water has to be at 120 degrees Fahrenheit when entering the dishwasher.

Concerning the Film, or cloudy look after the wash cycle.

This problem occurs due to excessive calcium build up inside the dishwasher. Try cleaning you dishwasher using a dishwasher cleaner. There are a few out there, Try Dishwasher Magic.
