Hi. This may sound silly, but the most likely reason the upper thread doesn't pick up the bobbin thread is that the needle is in backwards. (Sounds silly, but it's true!)

Needle shanks have a flat side and that flat side has to go in a particular way for your machine. With most modern machines, the flat side goes to the rear, facing away from you. Check your manual to be sure.

The second most likely reason is that your needle may be bent. Check that your needle is straight (or just use a new one).

Hope this helps!

Happy Sewing,

Robbie

The lower thread on the machine is jumpy, creates a loose (loopy) stitch every 1.5 cms or so. The upper thread is taut, but makes no difference if I put tension dial on lowest setting.

Hm, if the bobbin thread stitch is inconsistent, I would guess it is a problem with the bobbin tension. You might try picking up a new bobbin case for our machine. Bobbin cases do wear out or get damaged or there may even be a burr somewhere that is catching the bobbin thread.

Something else to try, before buying a new bobbin case, is:

Avoid old or bargain bin threads!
Install a brand new needle (compatible with the fabric & thread).
Remove the top thread from the machine.
Try a different brand of thread.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the upper tension to the midway point and test your machine.
Adjust the upper tension until the bobbin and top threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

On a brother ce 4000 the bobbin case keeps moving and slipping out of place

There is an adjustment on the upper left and lower right of the case. The upper adjustment is to stop the upper part of the case from sliding out. It turns a little clockwise to do this.
The lower right adjustment keeps the case from rotating and to keep it from falling out. To adjust do this:
Lower right adjustment - Loosen screw on left side of adjustment.
Move adjustment upwards while trying to rotate the bobbin case. It should come to a point where it will not rotate but don't make it super tight against the bobbin case. Just tight enough to allow a thread to move under the adjustment part and the case where they touch.

I cannot get the upper and lower thread to catch when I try to sew... I've gone over the manual and done everything over and over... what could I be doing wrong? Thanks so much for any help

First your tension might be wrong. You should be able to pull it with little to no resistance. It is a feel thing you must learn. Also the bobbin might be too tight. There is an adjustment screw on the bobbin. You should also have this medium to tight. To tight and it will not knot with the top thread. Finally most of the time the needle is just not going down far enough into the bobbin area. Needle might be too short. If it is just let it down a little. Also very important that you have the groove on the needle facing the direction called for in your machine.

The bobbin thread shows to the front. Does the bobbin or thread tension need adjusted

Generally, tension adjustments are made using the upper thread tension. Most likely the upper tension is set too tight and is pulling the bobbin thread up. Loosen the upper tension and try again. Tension is accurate when the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric. Whenever fabric, thread & needle are changed, there may be a need to adjust the upper tension.

HINT: When threading the upper thread, make sure the presser foot is RAISED during threading to make sure the upper tension disks are open and the thread seats properly.

Bobbin tension is only adjusted when the tensions are way out of whack. Only slight turns of the bobbin case tension screw are made in graduated movements and testing occurs after each adjustment.

What to do to fix the bobbin thread from jamming up everytime

There are a couple of reasons that can cause this.
a. Raise the pressure foot. As you load the top thread give small tugs to check for snags. They must be stopped.
b. Once the top threading is done on top lower the pressure foot. Now, give a tug on the thread. Is the tension really hard or just average? You may need to lower the tension to stop the jamming of the bobbin thread.
c. Clean the bobbin area. Check the bobbin tension and adjust as you need to.
d. Put a drop of oil on the race. (Thing the bobbin case sits on)
e. As the bobbin hook (sharp thing) is rotating does the bobbin case move back and forth a lot. You may need to adjust the bar that is next to the bobbin case so it can't rotate. Usually you will need to move it forward.
SEE INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO ADJUST THE BOBBIN. TENSION OF UPPER AND LOWER THREAD MUST BE RIGHT.

Old bernina 830 stitching problem: tight

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.
