HELP PLEASE - I have a Compaq SR1420NX and have just installed a new 512M chip in the available memory slot. My system has only 2 slots and one was being used by the 512M chip that came with my system. I wanted to upgrade from 512M to 1 Gig because my system appeared to be running slowly after loading more and more applications over the past few months. I thought the additional memory would help it run faster. I turned off my system to install the new memory. With both 512M chips installed, my system boots for a second through the Safe Mode red screen without hesitation, then appears to boot properly as it always has in the past. Once the boot up sequence has been completed, I am able to perform a few searches, but then for no apparent reason, the system shuts down and reboots all over again. I have tested the new 512M chip using a downloadable memory checker and it indicates that there is no memory problem. Does anyone have any ideas. I am running Windows XP. You are welcome to write to me at diskliq@gmail.com.

You need to find out what type of ram,and amount your motherboard takes (sd,ddr,ddr2,sod) and how many ram slots it has, the user manual of the mobo will tell you this information.if you dont have the manual search the net for it.
it is very easy physically on a desktop, you just push them in the slot ,taking note of the notches on the ram sticks, ensuring they lock down correctly,
note if you are using ddr2 you need to install in pairs to obtain the full speed of the ram, things can be a little more tricky on laptops as some are easy to get at, and others you need to remove the cover of the entire laptop.

good luck

Memory

One of the easiest methods of determining what memory your computer has and what upgrades you can install is to go to the Crucial Memory web site and use their Crucial System Scanner Tool, this will try to detect exactly what make and model your system is, and from this advise both what the currently installed memory is, and show compatible memory upgrades for your system.

Gateway 500x upgrade ram installation.

hi! there if your addibg a memory card check your memory speed if match to other memory card that are installed already, they should have same speed e.g DDR PC228 or SDR PC333 so check this out before installing. But if you replace the older one upgrading, switch off your computer open cover, there is slot there for your memory card bedide your processor,at both end there a lockway, unlock your memory card and pull it out all if you have several one, then insert on one slot if that is one memory card at 2gb lock it on both end.then swich on your computer check this out on your computer properties if there is change.how to do this left click my computer, click properties.regards

Installing memory upgrade

No.
Once you install the memory into the slot the BIOS will update the memory configuration during the bootup proccess.
You can check to see if your new memory has been fully recognised by double clicking "System" in control panel.
If you check the amount of memory in System before the install and compare it afterwards you will know for sure if the memory has registered correctly.

Upgrading Memory from 256 to 1GB

You shouldn't have to remove it, but if the system won't boot after try reversing the slot, and if that doesn't work take out the 256.
