Question about Maytag MMV1153A Microwave Oven

Open Question

MMV1153AAW- burn plastic smell and loud buzz...

We've had this over the range microwave for a couple of years (manufacture date of 2004), but only used it for a couple of months! A few months after installation, I was defrosting cornish game hens when it started buzzing loudly and began to smell like burning plastic. We spent the rest of the year looking for the reciept to make a warranty claim but, alas, it was gone. Anyway, we've sadly been using if for storage ever since, and I thought it was high time to see if there was any hope for it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

We've had exactly the same problem The oven was working fine until yesterday--I put in a baked potato, started the oven, and immediately heard a loud sound (like a small jet). When I opened the door I smelled a burned plastic odor. Not sure what to do and would appreciate a solution.

Greetings, we have the exact same model but 2005 manufacture date. This Microwave was standard with the home we purchased 20 months ago. Just went out this evening.

Loud buzzing, then POP and you could see something burning behind the top vent above the LED lights.

After a little research googling this model, i'm surprised that there hasn't been a recall.

Same problem! Just started tonight, in the middle of normal operation--- the buzz made me go back and check... and that horrible burned plastic smell. I was afraid I had a non-microwaveable bowl in there - but no such luck.

We tried a few more times- at one point it did it for about 4 seonds then stopped... gave us hope, but

my guess would be the wave cover. sometimes they smoke and makes sparking sounds. does it still heat food?...if it does, then its not the magnetron.

SOURCE: We have an MMV5165AAB Microwave oven, installed

the unit inside the microwave that heats called the "magnetron" has gone bad or the circuits that power the magnetron have failed. if its under warranty still, send it back to the manufacturer. if not you can call some repair shops and see how much it would be to service it, but its most likely going to be cheaper to purchace a new microwave since they are relatively cheap these days. microwaves are throw away product now days, they dont make them to last anymore, i hope this helps and good luck to you

Microwave makes a loud buzzing noise and emits a burning plastic smell

This indicates the magnetron has failed, buzzing sound and odor are classic symptoms. It is cheaper to replace than have it repaired.

My Kenmore 721.626222 which I have had about 6 years, runs but does not heat. There is also a strange smell - something like a burning smell.

When the oven does not heat, the problem is usually due to the magnetron failing. It the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It fails by shorting out causing a loud buzzing noise. The burning smell is the being magnetron overloaded due to the short. It not worth fixing since the replacement cost of a magnetron is close to the price of a new oven. Sorry.

Making loud buzzing sound & smells like wires burning.

That is the Magnatron or the Hi-Voltage transformer. If I could smell it I could tell the difference. The transformer will produce smoke more so than the Mag.

Burning smell and won't heat.

If it buzzes real loud it's probably the high volyage diode. However some times if it smells it's the transformer. Usually the diode is a cheap fix ~$10.00 but this model the diode is $50. It's number 50 on the link below. Let me know how it works out or you need anything else.

No Power at all after loud short buzzing sound

sounds Like an electrical fault in the Micro, Sorry but this is broken.... If this is within warranty (do check as some warrantys are for 3 yrs or more) get the manufacturer to replace/repair it for free. you could get it serviced, but it is probably cheaper to buy a new one.
