Sorry, You probably need to take it into an apple store, As it is hard to find your solution, but try holding down "menu" and "center" at the same time untill it reboots

I plugged in my i pod and came back a hour later and the screen was black and was frozen and none of the buttons would work

you will need to reset your ipod this will not delete songs. 1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
2 Press and hold Menu and the Center button for at least 6 seconds, until the
Apple logo appears.
If iPod nano won’t turn on or respond
â Make sure the Hold switch isn’t set to HOLD.
â The iPod nano battery might need to be recharged. Connect iPod nano to your
computer or to an Apple USB Power Adapter and let the battery recharge. Look for
the lightning bolt icon on the iPod nano screen to verify that iPod nano is receiving
a charge.
To charge the battery, connect iPod nano to a USB 2.0 port on your computer.

Make sure the hold/lock is not engaged first.
If not, try the 5 R's

These are for Nano, but they apply to all iPods:

Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore

My nano was almost out of battery, it went black, plugged it in to recharge and it is frozen. Can't get it to do anything.

A simple reset will probably work. Running Mp3 players on low batt can cause all sorts of goofiness.
