thanks...let me check, but I'm almost sure that Dell does NOT have a Firewire connector. Would need a special board.

according to smartdisk.com that's a firewire disk, hence no USB support.

by the way, here's a link to the 8400 service manual, in case you need it later.

ayup..it's called a firewire update..I suspect your 8400 will have an open PCI slot for that..get the fastest one that uP and memory configuration will handle.

thanks for using Fixya..and remember to close this one, by voting for who Fixesya, baby.

External hard drive full, want to erase and start over.

While the external hard drive is connected to the computer, click on my computer. Find the icon related to your external hard drive. Use the right button of the mouse to bring up the context menu and select format. This will erase your hard drive. BE sure that you really want to lose all the files on the external harddrive. They would be difficult if not impossible to restore.

Where can I purchase the cord for my FWFL40-N to be used with a MacBook Pro?

I have a firelite USBFLB60 60gb. My cord broke, so I just ordered "Cable Wholesale USB Type A Male / Mini-B Male Cable, 5 Pin, Black, 1 ft" from Amazon for very cheap. I think that is the correct adapter, and I imagine it would be the same for yours.

I have firelite external and it's not working. There's light but no spinning sound. what can I do?

This a firewire drive and needs to plugged into a firewire port to spin up. If you do not have a firewire port on your computer (most PC's don't) it will not work. I don't believe a firewire to USB connector will pass enough power to the drive to spin it up.

My computer died mid format on a 60gb firelite external. Now that I have it plugged in, it won't recognize it under my computer. Any ideas?

Have you gone into Disk Management to see if it is detected there?
Start | Run | diskmgmt.msc

Check for your drive in the list.

If it is not there, then go to a CMD prompt, and type diskpart
then list disk

Firelite HDD repair

The only think that can be replaced is the whole had drive unit inside the plastic enclosure.

If you disassemble an hard drive unit on normal environment you have over 90% of chances to damage the disks, as hard drives are normally built in a special e pressurized environment (clean room).

Therefore , even if it is possible (providing that also control board is replaced) the 60Gb 'internal disks' with 120MB, it is not worth attempting the operation, as chance this is unsuccessful are too big, and such rebuilt hard drive won't be a reliable data support.

If instead you want just to replace the external USB enclosure, in that case the operation can be done with no problem, just find a 120 GB disk and replace the old 60GB.

well. Open Disk Utility in the Applications folder under Utilities and see if it shows up and possibly mount it from there. Also open the System Profilier (also in the utilities folder) and check under USB - if that's how it's connected.
