Why was I told the aluminum anode would not work in my Whirlpool WH? Had it removed today after three weeks and it was covered with matter. Now have $60 Whirlpool rod installed on my lifetime warranty...

1) Ask question on pro water heater site run by foremost anode expert, and also ask about the power anode rod that works electrically instead of chemically and will not have repeated problem you describe:
http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/

2) More info about anodes:

I can not find the anode on my water heater

1) Copy following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
2) Anode might be located on hot water nipple as a combo.
Insert carriage bolt when removing nipple to avoid collapsing nipple during extraction.
Regular combo anode rods are available, or buy sausage-link combo available in 12" length to fit low headroom installations.

3) Ordinary 1-1/16" hex Anode might be located under the metal cover on steel tank.

4) If unit has power vent, the anode might be under power vent.
Workaround; Install combo anode to replace hot water nipple.

Ariston GL6+ Occasional rusty water. Can this be remedied? Thank you Ed

Ariston GL6 6-gallon electric water heater has anode rod to prevent steel tank from rusting.
Once anode rod depletes, the tank rusts.
All tank-type water heaters have replaceable anode rod that can stop rusting, but will not repair damaged tank.
Open following links for resources + manual with parts number and illustration on page 7 and 10. Part number is shown as 570241 anode rod.

I have a Reliance 501 electric water heater ... Everything works great but below the water out. Be rusty? How can I fix it?

The tank is rusting. Replace anode rod or replace water heater.
Once the anode rod depletes, then the tank starts to rust.
IF you can replace the anode rod, it will stop rusting, and then flush the rust out of water heater.
This might buy more life with same tank, but old anode rods are pretty solid and even impact wrench might not loosen it up.

Loosen anode rod on new tank before installing, and then inspect every 1-3 years, and 1-2 years if water is softened.

Where is the anode rod located on the rheem 81VP20s

Anodes are located on top of water heater.
There are no hard fast rules for location, either by model number or brand.
Most times the manual is likewise vague.
1) There is hex head visible on top of tank.
2) Hex head is located under a plastic cover
3) Hex head is located under metal top, so remove screws holding top, and lift top off to view hex head
4) Anode is connected to hot water nipple.
5) With 9-12-15-and lifetime tanks, you can have 2 anode rods, and each has to be made of same material to work properly. Usually magnesium-aluminum instead of aluminum.
But if you inspect and change anodes frequently to prolong life of tank, then one is as good as the next.

Tech resistor anode rod has resistor added to prolong life of anode.
You can cut rod off to fit size of tank. You want anode 5-6" from tank bottom so sediment build-up doesn't reach anode.
Anodes are standard 1-1/16" hex head.

Water stinks

If water has odor, then check anode rod or hire plumber to replace anode rod.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

Bacteria reacts with metal on anode rod, causing odor.
Good news is that anode rod is still functioning, so water heater is not rusted.
Once anode rod is depleted, you get no more odor, but tank is rusting and will need to be replaced.
Changing anode rod periodically will let tank last much longer.

I have whirpool hot water heater mmodleezf 40RDO45 V six months ago I had to buy and new anode and now the water is stinky again like rotten eggs, am I going to have to buy a new one every six months? ...

The smell is from bacteria.
1) The tank needs a new anode rod, but it also needs a periodic dose of hydrogen peroxide.
Recommend you reconfigure incoming water pipes where you can easily add 2 bottles of hydrogen peroxide and then flush water heater each 6 months. The peroxide kills the bacteria. Peroxide is not harmful to you since it is also used orally. You don't drink a bottle of peroxide, but it will not cause harm in trace amounts left in water heater.
2) There is something else to consider. If yours is a 12-year tank or lifetime tank, then you probably have 2 anode rods. Replacing one anode rod will not solve problem.
3) Another solution is a power anode rod. If your tank has two anode rods, then replace one with powered anode, and then remove the second anode rod.
According to the seller, he's had only one person where the water heater smell came back.

Here are links to information and to the powered anode rod:
http://www.waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
http://www.waterheaterrescue.com/pages/WHRpages/English/OrderPages/XCart/Power-Anode.html

Manufacturers are starting to add powered anode rods to their top models to assure longer tank life and better customer satisfaction.
