Question about Elmo Projectors TRV-35H Slide Projector

3 Answers

Need software I am running a slide to video operation and would like to automate my Elmo TRV-35H with zoom in, iris control, timer, etc. I need the software that will allow my computer to do this via the projector?s serial port. Last version was for Windows 95, but I will take any version - Windows, Mac, etc.

The Elmo TVR-35H is not a projector, but is a telecine device for transferring slide to video. It automatically advances each slide, which I can then zoom up or change the iris. There is a RS-232 port, nine pin, but I haven't a clue as to the software that will run the unit from a PC.

I got the software from Elmo tech support emailed to me as a zip file for free. I am in the process of getting the RS232C connection going and testing. I have not been able to find the instructions for the software yet, but it is supposedly part of the ZIP file sent. I suggest contacting ELMO support for assistance as they were some of the best service I have had in years.

UPDATE: I downloaded the software Elmo supplied. The application runs on an old Windows 98 computer. The application will allow you to forward and reverse slides, zoom in and put for composition, focus and adjust the iris to compensate for light and dark slides. Your white balance and color correction just be done manually from the projector. NOTE: The application does not store settings; you must repeat these for each slide. You must also use a null modem cable to connect your computer to the Elmo - a straight DB9 RS-232 cable does not work. Download the manual and operation guide from Elmp. This guide also shows the RS-232 connection and while it does not mention null modem, a null modem cable is essential for remote operation. The control program allows you to change RS-232 settings.

I use two TRV-35H machines in a slide transfer operation. I run the Elmo app on an old Windows 98 machine via the 9-pin RS232 port. You must use a DB-9 null modem for the connection - these are cheap. The application will not store the commands for an 80-slide show, as far as I can determine. Each slide is a unique set of instructions. The app will run an entire show, however, without automatic zoom, focus and iris.

I got software from ELMO support that loaded on my PC to run the TRV-35H. It is a ZIPPED file they sent me, seems pretty straight forward. I have yet to test as I have not gotten the RS232C cable to connect up yet. Instructions is supposedly in the zipped files, but I have not looked at it as of yet. Good luck. I have copies some slides by use of a Zippy and while a slow process, the images are great and corrections for any slide problems (color, brightness, etc..) have made the digital images on teh PC look great.

Can i convert to a dvd i have a trv-35h elmo

You can very easily. You may use the S-VHS output on your Elmo ( a 4-pin DIN socket on the rear) going into the S-VHS input on your DVD player. You will need an S-VHS cord. Very cheap at Radio Shack or on Ebay. This gives the best quality. Our you can use the more familiar RCA composite video output (yellow socket) from the Elmo into the composite or auxiliary input on the DVD recorder.Be sure you have selected the proper input on your DVD recorder. Use a TV set as a monitor so you can see what you are recording. When I convert slides to DVD, I do a test run through the carousel to be sure the slides are all facing the right way, not upside down or backward.I set my Elmo timer on 5 seconds and let the carousel advance automatically. You may want to zoom in or color correct as you convert. In that case, pause your DVD recorder between slides, make your adjustments, then resume recording. This is called assembly editing. It works very smoothly and you get a better show,

I bought a used Elmo TRV-35H 35mm projector. The camera works fine, but the tray only moves in reverse when I press the forward or reverse button. And after moving through a few slides it then moves...

Remember, mains voltages exist within the projector and thus the unit MUST be disconnected from the supply line whilst carrying out any servicing.

The reported fault sounds like sluggish operation of the advance/reverse mechanism. Lubricants used in the past tend to age and dry out so that the mechanism doesn't function correctly. IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT TO DO SO, remove the top of the unit and locate the slide mechanism. Carefully clean with cotton buds dipped in pure electronic cleaner and then re lubricate, using an oil dripper with the finest industrial sewing machine oil - emphasis is on a 'drip' of oil on the moving pivot points. Put the top back on and try again.

Problems with remote controllers are suually associated with tarnished contacts either in the hand unit or the projector. Once again, the contacts can be carefully cleaned and all should be well once more.

If you are using Kodak Carousel magazines, make sure you are using the correct magazine for your slides - cardboard or glass mounts. Don't mix slides in a magazine, as this can also cause problems.

Try turning colour correction OFF. (button in up position). See what affect the iris control has. This control will changed the color of the slide from deep red at nearly closed to washed-out blue and white. at full open. I adjust the controls for each slide. The color temperature of the 8549 lamp varies with the brightness. lower level warmer, higher cooler.

What size tray doe the Elmo TRV-35H use? What mfg is comparable?

It uses a standard 80 slide Kodak Carousel or comparable tray. Transvue works the best. Sometimes I can coax the Elmo to use a 140 slide tray, but the slides sometimes jam.

Elmo trv-35g & h - showing brite yellow color on areas in picture

I'm not too familiar with this unit but in general I'd check that the lamp is the correct type, not simply worn though not burned out, and that it's seated (aligned) properly in its socket.

less likely: If you are comfortable taking a voltage reading in the socket, it should read approximately 10 - 20% higher than the rated voltage of the lamp. This is because there is no load on the circuit with the lamp out of the socket. With the lamp in, the voltage would drop a bit. If your reading is significantly lower than the lamp voltage rating, I'd suspect a wiring problem but cna't specualte further.
