Some cd players will not play cd-r! Unless it has played them before, there's nothing you can do about it.

> 4.37 GB

4377 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 is 4.7 times 10 (to a large power).

So, depending on if you measure as multiples of 1000 (10**3) or 1024 (2**10), you get either '4.3' or '4.7'.

Pick a collection of files of over 1GB (a CD-writable holds 700MB), and try to write to one DVD-recordable. If it works, it works, despite the "claim" that the blank disk was a CD-recordable.

Trying to copy some pics onto a cd to get some disc space but my drive wont recognise the cd rw

do you have a cd writer or rom drive is the first thing you have to check, if it's a writer then put the disc in first and it should give you an option to write files to cd accept then follow the the instruction to add your files, assuming your running windows. iif that does'nt work check to see if your discs are + or - it may be your wriiter will only accept one kind

you need to download the software for cd-rw drag and drop recording.

Go to the website and look in support for the model you have and download the utility.

What is the difference between a 12X 700MB 80 min CD-RW disk and one that is 4X 700 MB 80 min ?

The difference is how fast you can burn(write data) onto these discs

12x would be faster than 4x

Also the 12x is written as CD-RW Which is Compact Disc - Re-Writable Which means that you can write over this.

4x Is not specified meaning that its probably not 'cd-rw' meaning once the data is written on it, it cannot be taken off.

Not reading dvd r or rw as writable disk

It sounds like you are having issues with all DVD writable disks. From the specs I was able to find online about your DVD writer, DVD+RW discs may not be compatible with the the drive. Make sure you are using DVD-RW (note the minus instead of +). I think you might need to reinstall your DVD drivers. This should solve the issue.
