Repair of a 1970s HP calculator: HP 27

I bought this one in college and would like to keep it working.  When using it on a fully charged battery the display (seemingly randomly) displays blinking digits (zeroes?) across the display and then goes blank.  I have purchased two replacement batteries for it, but that has not solved the problem.  Help me keep this old lady going!  Thanks.

Hi the chances are the board has got damp at some point causing it to short the only chance you have of saving the calculater is to remove the case and clean any parts of the board that look coroded but even doing this might not get it working as some part could be damaged and their is no way of replacing these parts also check battery terminals are free from corosion

I HAVE REPALCED THE BATTERIES AND IT WILL NOT POWER ON.

The HP 32SII calculator has a very common problem with the keyboard connections. There might be nothing else wrong with the calculator except the contacts.

Try pinching the calculator just below the middle of the screen above the [LN] and [Y^x] keys while pushing the [C] button to power it on.

If this worked, at least you know where the problem is. Fixing that problem temporarily, some users wrap a rubber band around the calculator at that point and put something under it to keep pressure on that spot.

The longer-term fix is harder and involves taking the calculator apart to replace a foam pad to keep pressure on the plastic keyboard contact strip against the printed circuit board contacts.

Somebody (not me) put together an Instructables page for the HP 17B calculator, which is built exactly the same as the 32SII.

Ti 83 plus charger

The TI 83 is a calculator, not a battery charger. If you want to use rechargeable batteries with it, you have to take the batteries out and charge them using a separate battery charger.

My HP 10s Scientific calculator does not switch on what could be the problem, is it maby because the calculator was left in a drawer and now the batery ran flat hou can I charge it on the solar power...

You can't charge the calculator off the solar power panel. The solar power panel merely conserves battery power when using the calculator in a bright environment. Try putting in a new battery and see whether the calculator turns on.

HP48SX Battery drain

Hello,

I suggest you use rechargeable batteries. They usually drain faster than the alcaline ones anyway. So have 2 sets of rechargeable batteries. Evaluate the number of days a set lasts. Insert the charged batteries before the old ones are thourougly drained.

The life of your batteries in the calculator depends on the usage.

About repairs: I am convinced that it will cost you more to have it fixed than to buy a new HP calculator (HP 49g*'s, HP 50g* 's).

Hope it helps.

Water damage

This is going to sound super dumb put leave it in a bowl of rice for a couple days. Rice will obsorbe the water. Also, change all five of the batteries(the 4 AAA ones and the back up battery). And if that doesn't work, you're pretty much out of luck. However, don't rush to the store and buy a new calculator. If you're in college or know someone that is in college, do what I do. Go to a math or sicence lab professor and ask them for a calculator at the end of the semester. I'm getting a new 89 pretty soon and i'm kinda excited. Good luck with your calculator
