My laptop gives no sound at all. i tried reinstalling drivers - no difference. the sound card is sigmatel c major. any idea wat more i can do to fix up this?
This is what I posted on Yahoo answers in reply to this problem a few months ago
It
may be that the speaker wires themselves are cut. The 700m's have a
problem with the hinge for the monitor cutting the wires to the
speakers due to their placement. You can check out this link:
http://www.lukemiller.org/journal/2006/0...
That details the problems, along with pictures and a nice guide on how
to fix it. It's easy to check... if you look at the top of the
keyboard, you see the Dell logo, and just to the left of that is a
place for a small flathead screwdriver. Pry that up (carefully, and it
must be done with the screen completely opened so it is 180 degrees).
The wires are tiny black and white, 4 of them, in the right hand hinge.
If they are cut that's your problem.
If you call Dell they will tell you that you have to buy a whole LCD
kit (~$500) because that's the only way you can get the speakers. But
you can usually find them on Ebay (I did) for about $25-30 used. Check
out that link for how to do it.
As far as the power, I would check first that the battery is fully and
properly seated, otherwise wouldn't know what to tell you there.
Cheers

Hi,
Better to reinstall windows.Otherwise u take from nearest service center.
Tilting the screen to a different angle worked for me.
I had the same problem but this was thankfully taken care of Dell under my 4yr Warranty.
Solution #1 is right on...the speaker wires were cut by the hinge.
As mikec2222 indicates, Dell actually replaced the LCD screen to fix the problem since they come as one unit (bad bad design choice!).
Hope those of you having the problem are able to implent the fix suggested in the link by mikec2222.

It is probably the speaker wires the run under the right hings of the computer. Tons of problems with this but easy to fix with a soldering iron and a steady hand. I couldn't find the replacement part number for the speaker anywhere - Dell claims that you have to replace the entire screen. Surely there is somewhere you can buy the part - I just haven't figured it out yet. There are several sites that give a step by step on how to fix the wires.
sometimes the wires break, dell had a small design flaw on thier end, it's an easy fix, just remove your keyboard, splice the 4 wires back together and you'll have your sound back... I had that issue happen to me, I just seen broken black and white wires when i took it apart, and fixed it.... A simple 10-15 minute task....you can do it yourself and save a few bucks too!

I have same problem, it doesnt work if you reinstall window...I have performed low level dell diagnostics and resulted in failure of sound card with following code 1B22:061B. Not sure whom to contact on this...

I too have the same problem. Laptop speakers died sometime last week. I can still hear from the headphones.
Actually, in my case, I found that lowering the screen (tilting it) worked to get the audio back in the laptop speakers..but this is really inconvenient as I cannot see what is on the screen...

I have The Same Prob i was taking apart the dash board and i see a wire cut i say because i open & close it
Could you please provide me with the service tag of the computer so that I could assist you further with this issue?
I had the same issue with my laptop too.... Manufacturing issue.... after a period of time the wires inside tend to break..... Dell's Fault on that part.... Pry off the panel above the keyboard, you'll see that 4 little black and white wires broke... i just removed the keyboard unplugged the cable and repaired the wire.... You'll have sound again. Simple 10 - 15 minute fix.....
