Thanks for trying... but I have a Ch DVD 300, not the Sony dvp-c660.  Your instructions or suggestions did not work.  Nor does the operators manual instructions make the subtitles come up... the unit must be broke in that mode....   Thanks....

Hi glad to help you follow these instructions they should be easy to follow but if you have any problems give me a shout back ok good and hope you lady friend can enjoy all of her films now just remember to select the right language and you should have no problems.
Thanks for using the site and glad to help let me know how you get on ok

Step 1:
Set up your Sony DVP-C660 CD/DVD player. Make sure your remote control is functioning and you can see the display on the TV screen. Load a DVD.
Step 2:
Press “Display” on your remote control. This opens the menu.
Step 3:
Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the “Subtitle” option and hit “Enter” to select it.
Step 4:
You’ll be given a list of languages available on the DVD. Choose one and press “Enter.”
Step 5:
To turn subtitles off, select “Off” instead of a language.

Hi what tv are you using it with and have the subtitles worked before now.
By this i mean some tellys you can select the screen size like wide screen or 14/9 this adjusting the viewing area of the screen im just wondering if the subtitles are their but just off the screen.
On the tv remote check if you have a button that changes the size depending on your telly the subtitles might be just of screen.
Im still looking for sollution for you but all im getting so far is the firmware being the problem but i dont think you will want to update the firmware on the dvd player as its not that easy to do.
Ill keep looking and wait for your reply ok

Hi try this if you enter the dvd setup menu and adjust screen ratio or settings here and select 4:3 if you have normal telly or 16:9 if you have wide screen let me know if this makes a difference or not as having the wrong format can put the subtitles out of view.
But from what ive seen their is a lot of problems with this type of dvd player and they seem to start going wrong after few months or purchase let me know if it makes a difference or not then ill look again for you ok

When I watch a movie and the dialogue switches to other languages when foreign characters are talking, I dont get any of the subtitles. I have to turn subs on when this happens. V frustrating.

Maybe that's how it works, unless there is an auto subs or you must leave subs (aka subtitles) on.

You did not specify a make and model tv to comment on exactly.

I can't figure how to get the closed captions to work. I am nearly deaf.

Press SETUP
Get to LANGUAGE SETUP PAGE
You can select OSD language, and select audio/subtitle/menu
language of DVD discs if available. Also you can select font type for mpeg4 subtitle

Remember you get SUB-TITLE only if your DVD supports it meaning contains it at the first place.

I want to buy DVD's with subtitles for my daughter who is deaf

Nearly all DVD's have subtitles on them. You can simply select them by accessing the menu screen on the DVD when it loads. Go for the audio/language option. Also you can use the menu of any DVD and Blue Ray player and set it to show subtitles. When buying a DVD look at the back and it will tell you what languages are available and the subtitles. Some DVD's also use the initials "CC" standing for closed captions or subtitles. For your information too digital TV broadcasts have subtitles too. They can be shown be selecting them again from the TV menu system.

How can I turn off the closed caption/sub titles?

Subtitles are controlled from the DVD player. If there is not a 'Subtitle' button on the DVD player's remote, you will have to turn off the subtitle from the DVD player's menu system.
If you no longer have your manual, you can likely find it here: http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/apex_digital/apex_digital_dvd_player_product_list.html

How can i remove unwanted subtitles the movie is in english and the sub titles ate very distracting

Usually, if the subtitles are from your dvd player, you can go to the main menu, select "languages" or "setup" (depending on the dvd), and find the subtitle option. You should be able to shut them off there in the menu. If the subtitles are there because of your tv, there should be a button labeled "cc" on your remote. If you press this key a few times, it should eventually read something like "cc off" on the tv screen. I hope this helps, and good luck! Sincerely, Der Strom

By the numbers! How do I turn on the closed

there is no closed captions on dvds, you can use subtitles, very similar to closed captions. just load dvd
look into either extra features or subtitles

it would say "english for deaf/hard of hearing." or just plain english subtitle. either way, it works.

I would like to be able to record TV shows WITH subtitles/closed captions. I have a Hisense HD LCD TV with built in HD tuner. I would like to be able to record onto a DVD/VCR. I'm getting conflicting...

Hey, I have a deaf brother with this issue. What I done was route the AV output of the TV to the AV input of the recorder. Set your recorders source to AV1 (or whichever you use) and set your TV to the program you want to record, also turn subtitles on. Because you wont have your TV set to the input your DVD recorder is on, you won't be able to see the DVD recorders output, but thats fine. Just press record on the unit - you have to leave the TV on the channel it's recording. Now you should be recording TV with subtitles with no problem :D
