My 2003 Ford Escape has a rear wiper which suddenly stopped working. It will dispense water and I can hear a light ticking sound as if the unit is trying to work. However, the blade does not move at all.

If you can detect the wiper motor running but it doesn't rotate, you need a new wiper/motor assembly. A rebuilt unit is $75 and a new unit is $125 at rockauto.com
Gm will tell you this is normal lifter noise if it from the top of the motor. It could be from the exhaust but you would hear it from under the car more. I do not care for the responce from GM but they say it is ok.
i presume you mean wiper water pump... first locate the relays for the horn and rear wiper and replace them... usually found in the fuse panel under the dash... then fill up the rear water resevoir for the back wiper and try it again.
