You need to take the top cover off to get to motor shaft. Some had a couple of screws from the bottom, others had tabs, use a flat blade screwdriver to fit into the slots at the bottom edge of the top, pry out and up to pop the cover off.

How do I replace the belt for this model

Make sure vacuum is not plugged in to power outlet. Lay it upside down and remove 4 screws from bottom plate covering brush roll. Remove bottom plate and pull the brush roll out. Clean hair and debris from brush roll and make sure it spins freely. Remove end caps from brush roll if possible and clean debris out. Install new belt around motor shaft then insert brush roll into belt and pull on brush roll to give you enough leverage to stretch belt far enough to put. Brush roll back into position. Reinstall bottom plate and screws. Make sure brush roll will turn before turning vacuum back on. Belt will lose elasticity and should be replaced twice a year.

Cant figure out how to replace belt

Hi Sylvie,

It is fairly simple to change a belt on a vacuum. I'll explain.

First, Turn the vacuum upside down with the handle in the locked position. Remove the plate on the bottom. Sometimes it's held on by screws, sometimes by clips which you should pry off with a flat blade screwdriver and sometimes you can take them off easily with your thumbs.
You should be able to see the agitator brush and belt now. Use the straight screwdriver to take the brush off. Now you can slip the belt off. Clean the inside and the agitator brush.

If you have a new belt, slip it onto the motor, then onto the end of the agitator brush making sure the belt is tight. Replace the brush and give it a sping a couple of times to make sure the belt and brush are both on properly and all are working. Put the bottom plate back on.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd surely appreciate your vote. Thanks for visiting with us.

I have a 20 yr old upright U4689-910 with a broken agitator belt. I have a replacement belt. I have removed the L shaped plate on the bottom of the vac. It is not clear to me how to replace the belt at...

If it is like the older hoover models you need toDISCONNECT FROM MAINS FIRST then
lift out the roller with the brushes on it, grip firmly at both ends and pull away from body of hoover, loop the belt over it and push it back in. Make sure you loop belt over the pulley the correct way or the brushes will rotate in the wrong direction! (there should be a diagram to show that on the hoover)

I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

I appreciate your vote if you appreciate my reply and remember, even if you don't vote for me a please and thank you goes a long way

Trying to change the belt

things you will need Vacuum belt
  • Screwdriver
  1. Locate and purchase the correct belt for your Eureka vacuum cleaner from the local grocery or department store. Vacuum belts come in different sizes according to your model of vacuum. Check your owner's manual or the vacuum itself for your model number.

  2. Turn your vacuum cleaner over so that the bottom of the unit is facing you. Remove the cover plate from the bottom by undoing the screws that are holding it in place with a screwdriver.

  3. Locate the belt pulley rod near the back of the vacuum base coming out of the motor. With the vacuum cleaner base turned upside down and facing you, the motor and pulley rod should be up near the top of the base.

  4. Slide the vacuum brush roller out of the slots at the bottom of the vacuum base and remove the old belt from the brush roller and pulley rod. With the brush roller off of the unit, clean the brush by removing any strings or cords wrapped around the tube.

  5. Install the new belt by looping it over the belt pulley rod next to the motor and then looping around the end of the brush roller in the belt slot. Hold the brush roller and pull back on it to tighten the belt while you slide the roller back into the slots on the vacuum base.

  6. Replace the base cover plate by snapping it back into place and securing it with screws. Turn vacuum back upright and turn it on to test the belt and verify the unit is working

Beater bar belt install

  • 1

Unplug the vacuum cleaner and turn it upside down, flat on the floor, with the roller brush facing up.

  • 2

Remove the the bottom cover plate from the vacuum by prying it off gently with a screwdriver blade. Set aside the cover plate.

  • 3

If the old belt is broke, remove it by pulling the belt from underneath the roller bush. If the belt is not broken but simply worn out, and is still attached, cut it off with scissors.

  • 4

Remove the roller brush by lifting both ends from the grooved slots in the housing of the vacuum cleaner.

  • 5

Cut away hair, thread, string and other debris wound around the roller, using the scissors. Tangles on the roller brush are a common reason for belt wear and breakdowns due to the added weight and stress on the roller brush.

  • 6

Slip the replacement belt over the roller brush and seat the belt in the groove in the center of the roller.

  • 7

Slide the roller brush back into the grooved mounts on either side of the housing and snap into place.

  • 8

Pull back on the new belt and slip the loop over the pulley attached to the vacuum motor.

  • 9

Replace the bottom cover by snapping it back on the housing until it clicks into place.

How do you replace the belt on a G4 Kirby Vacuum?

Remove the head from the machine, and unlatch and remove the bottom plate. The brushroll can now be pulled or pryed out. Slide the new belt onto the brushroll and center it. When re-installing the brush, note that one end cap is wider than the other. The brush caps are also marked with 1, 2, or 3 notches to adjust for wear. In normal use, setting 1 should face the carpet. Be SURE both ends are on the same setting. Replace the metal rug plate and turn the belt lifter counterclockwise to stretch the belt into a loop. Place the head back on the machine, latch it firmly in place, and turn the belt lifter clckwise to drop the belt onto the motor shaft.

    Changing the belt

Always make sure your machine is unplugged from the outlet before replacing the belt.
Newer Oreck uprights have an access plate on the right hand side of the base (as you're looking at it from the front). Remove the one screw from the access plate and slide it forward. Snake the new belt around the brush roll pulley and then strrrrrrretch it back to the motor shaft. Replace the access plate.
If your model does not have an access plate; turn the machine upside down, Remove all screws. Lift the bottom plate off. Observe the position of the brush roll ends, One side of each end cap will have several notches cut into it,this is the 'new' side, the other side is smooth, this is the 'old' side. You can reposition the brush roll the the 'old' side if your bristles appear worn down.
With the brush roll still removed; place one end of the belt over the motor shaft first, place the other side of the belt around the brush roll pulley and stretch the brush roll forward until it is back in place.
Spin the brush roll by hand before replacing the cover to ensure the belt is not pinched.
    Replace to cover.

    Change the belt

    Hi There,

Here's how you can replace the belt on your Eureka SmartVac 4870. I have taken pictures of the repair to help you better with this.

Here's what you'll need in order to complete this repair:

    - Eureka Style R Extended Life Replacement Belt, Part 61110
    - Eureka SmartVac Model 4870 Roller Brush Assembly, Part 61520 (Only if the brush no longer spins, or the brushes are worn out)
    - Phillips head screw driver

Step 1. Turn the vacuum upside down so that the brush roller is facing upwards. Unscrew the three screws that I've highlighted in red.

    56134d4.jpg

Step 2. Remove the bottom plate after unscrew the three red highlighted screws. Once you remove the bottom plate, you'll have full access to the roller brush and belt area. Remove the roller brush by pulling straight up on the roller brush itself. Discard old belt, and test roller brush to ensure that it spins freely by holding the very end of each side, also called the bearing caps with just your finger tips. Try spinning the brush with your thumbs. The brush should spin several times around with each spin. If you notice the brush doesn't spin at all, or if you feel some resistance when you spin the brush, this means that your bearings are either gone, or will be soon. It may be time to consider a new roller brush at this time.

    16ceeba.jpg

Step 3. Remove the new Eureka Style R belt from the packaging, and wrap one end around the the metal pin, on the opposite side of the roller brush. This pin is actually the motor shaft that spins the belt, which spins the brush.

    81c4db4.jpg

Step 4. Wrap the other end of the belt through the side of the roller brush that has the pulley, and use the roller brush to stretch the brush roll back into the agitator housing. Make sure the end caps fit in the housing correctly by making sure there are no gaps between the roller brush housing and the end caps of the roller brush.

    010b671.jpg

Step 5. After reinstalling the roller brush back into the housing with the belt attached, pull the belt forwards towards the brush. The brush should spin when you do this. Make sure that the belt is not pinched underneath of the roller brush or this will cause the belt to break immediately when you turn the vacuum back on.

Step 6. Reinstall the bottom plate, making sure that the little notches on the front end of the bottom plate tucked underneath of the reverse notches on the bottom housing of the vacuum cleaner. Tighten all 3 screws back into the bottom plate. Make sure the vacuum is set to carpet mode, and turn the vacuum on.

If you have any questions about this repair, or if you notice that the roller brush stops when the brushes hit the carpeting, please just use the clarification request form here on the Fixya repair page. I will then be happy to walk you through a little more advanced repair of replacing the clutch in the Eureka SmartVac that controls the rug/floor switch. Most of the time though the belt will be all the vacuum needs.

I hope that this was helpful information to you. If this helped you, please be so kind and rate the repair as helpful by clicking on the thumbs up icons in the top corner of this repair.

    Thank you very much,

    Chris J.

Describe how to replace belt on hoover windtunnel bagless

If you turn the vacuum so the bottom is facing up you will see the base plate that covers the roller brush. There will be four screws (usually phillips head), remove the screws and the base plate will lift off. You now have access to the roller brush and belt. Lift the roller brush up and remove the old belt. Place one end of the new belt over the motor shaft and the other end over the roller brush and put the roller brush back in place. Now simply replace the base plate and you're done! This models requires Hoover belt # 38528033 (single) or Hoover belt #40201160 (2 pack). You can get this belt at www.vacbelts.com.

How do I replace the brush roll on my oreck xl??

Turn the vacume upside down. Remove the 5 screws on the bottom plate. 3 are near the brush roll, and 2 are near the back. Remove the bottom plate. take the belt off the motor end. pull up on both ends of the brush roll. Put new brush roll on making sure that you put both ends to the new position, not old. ( it is marked on one end, and there are marks on the side that goes up so the can match.)(If putting back the old brush roll you can switch to the old position. After a year or two you can switch the new brush roll to the old position.) Put the bels back on the motor shaft and then stretch and start the belt on the brush roll and rotate the brushroll by hand untill the belt is all the way on.
put the bottom plate back on and tighten the 5 bottom screws.
