I have a new acer that will not recognized the IP address for my internet connection. Internet provider has completed troubleshoot and says it's not their connection.

if you go to ("start/run and type CMD" if XP) or (start / -in "start search here" type CMD , if it is a vista) and you should see a black window, in it, type --> ipconfig
and press enter, that should show you an IP address, if it is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx that means you network card is either bad or not talking to you router of DSL modem , if it is connected to router, bypass the router and connect it directly to modem (cable modem or DSL) and restart the computer, if still does it (meaning 169 still), that means the cord could be bad, (swap it) or that means you network card is BLOCKED from the outside world by a Firewall. diable the firewall, (disable windows firewall first, restart pc, if still, that means you might have an another firewall (some firewalls if they expire, they do a total lock down, meaning, they will not allow you to connect to the outside world, in some cases you might need to uninstall the firewall totally.)

worst case senario , you might need to replace you network card *go to walmart, and get one, they are around the $10 or $12. and replace it. (hoping that you have either XP or vista) if you have an earlier one, do not even bother with it.

I cant access any website form my dell home pc though my high speed provider has confirmed my modem is online, also I ran the WIndows diagnostic and it said my connectivity is fine, any guesses? thanks k

I suspect you are not connecting to a Domain Name Server. Open a command prompt and type ping www.google.com and hit enter.

You should get four replies with the IP address 74.125.19.147.

Are you behinid a router, or are you plugged directly into your modem?

From that same command prompt, type ipconfig /all and hit enter. Make sure you see IP Address values for DNS servers.

From the command prompt type ipconfig /release
You'll get a bunch of zeros back.

Now type ipconfig /renew
This will force the system to get new address information.

Now, try to get online.

Have you tried turning off your internet connection (i.e. cable modem, dsl modem, fios modem) and your router and pc's. Then after about 5 minutes turn on the cable/dsl/fios modem, wait 1 minute, turn on router, wait 1 minute, turn on a pc. Try surfing

Cant play online games with my Gateway® M-6864 FX Black w/ Orange Accent. can still get on the internet but cant play online games.

Hi Bob,

If you are having issue playing online games but able to surf the internet, It means that the Firewall is not allowing you to play online games. Normally this is cause by a Firewall protection. As of now, DSL modems has Firewall features and you can manage them if you know so. But if you don't, contact your Internet provider to resolve this issue.

Three Firewalls

You can't 'uninstall' the Windows Firewall, just deactivate it. Another option is to turn off the modem firewall (the strongest of the three, now two) and to activate the Windows one (the weakest but most annoying one). Now you stated that you can't use Internet Explorer but everything else was ok, skip IE, use Firefox or Opera.
Good luck!

Cant connect to wireless network set up in my home. will connect for a few seconds and then say that I cant be logged on to the network

Try going to the manufacturers website and find out how to access your router. Then try disabling your hardware firewall. You can also reset your modem and unplug all connections for about 10 secs and then do it again. I had that problem with a linksys router and I would get booted all of the time.
