Problem with LG WD-8023FB washing machine

The machine makes a loud grinding noise each time it changes direction while washing, more so on short cycles. Thanking you Diesel Dog

The machine does not make any noise while spinning. The noise is always on a short cycle and with heavy items in the machine.

  • diesel dog Mar 10, 2008

It has nothing to do with the motor.

  • diesel dog Mar 10, 2008

The bearings are not gone, something I have noticed is leaking oil around one of the shock asorber suporting the outer plastic case, but if this was faulty it would not spin and there is know problem with it spinning.

  • diesel dog Mar 10, 2008

This washing has made this noise since we purchased it but it has progressively got worse. The washing machine was purchased second hand supposed to be only 3 months old and it has not done much work. I would like a exploded view of this machine which I think would help me. This machine is only about 18 months old now.

  • diesel dog Mar 12, 2008

I think I have solved my problem. I put some belt dressing on the belt and the noise has gone for now,so I hope my problem has been fixed.

  • diesel dog Mar 12, 2008

No the manual did not help at all

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2014

When the machine, is connected to the mains supply, it gives a musical chime, however the display is dead. Play with the program start button, and the display becomes activated and you can then continue with the wash.
The problem now is, even messing with the program start button, the display remains dead.
I think the problem is with, this start button, or is there anything else that can give this problem
    Thanking you in anticipation.

Hello sir,

  1. If a washing machine is rumbling, and very **isy on spin, the main suspect is the drum bearings. Drum bearing failure is common on many washing machines due to water getting into them if the drum bearing seal fails. To check for drum bearing failure you can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand. If the drum rumbles when spun then the bearings may have gone. There should be a constant rumble all the time the drum is revolving.
  2. A**ther drum bearing failure symptom is excessive up and down play in the drum which can be checked for by lifting the drum up and down from the drum lip behind the door seal. A further symptom of drum bearing failure can be a brown rust patch underneath the washing machine and down the back of the outer drum, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes) although this patch is **t always present. There are usually two small holes at the back of the drum bearings where water that has got past the drum bearing seal trickles out, and it's usually stained with grease and rust if water has got into the bearings.
  3. Loud **ises when turning the drum by hand can also be caused if the drum itself splits, or the spider at the back of the drum has come away from the drum, is corroded or even broken. This would **rmally be a loud **ise on each revolution of the drum whereas the **ise when drum bearings have gone is constant all the time the drum is turning. Lifting the drum checking for excessive play can often reveal a broken or loose drum spider which sometimes only occurs at certain points round the drum (the spider has three arms and is bolted to the drum at three points)
  4. Coins or other obstructions trapped inside the tub under the drum can make horrendous **ises as they get tossed about on spin. They often don't make the **ise unless laundry is in though. Look out for obvious dints and creases in the drum itself as evidence of a coin or similar stuck inside although be aware that it only shows there's been an obstruction in at some point and the coin could have fallen into the sump hose or filter and **t actually be the cause of the **ise at this time
  5. Other causes of a **isy washing machine are coins and other obstructions inside the water pump. This will cause **ise when the washing machine is emptying the water. Coins or other obstructions can get trapped between the outer tub and the inner drum. This would produce a lot of **ise on spin as the coins get tossed around inside. Often, spinning the drum by hand will **t reproduce the **ise in the case of coins because the coins drop to the bottom of the tub and lay flat when the washing machine isn't spinning
  6. A light scraping or ratchity **ise when the drum is turned by hand is commonly a bra wire trapped between the tub and drum. They can often be removed from underneath with the sump hose taken off. It's always worth checking that the wire isn't poking through one of the holes in the drum which can be pulled back out from inside the door. It's rare, but I've retrieved 3 or 4 this way over the years.
  7. A high pitched squealing or harsh **ise can be motor bearing wear. This can also be checked for by taking the belt off and running the motor alone.
  8. A k**cking **ise can be a loose tub weight. This would **rmally be worse with heavy loads and would **t be present on spin with ** washing in. This is because the k**cking **ise is caused when the tub (or outer drum) shakes about on spin. Without washing inside the drum the tub doesn't move. A**ther symptom of a loose tub weight is grey concrete dust under the washing machine. Warning: These days most washing machines have plastic tubs and over tightening a tub weight bolt can easily shear the bracket resulting in a new tub being required. Try loctite. Often, once a tub weight has come loose the plastic tub is damaged anyway especially if it isn't caught early e**ugh
  9. Sometimes a badly worn drive belt can cause a surprising amount of **ise. I've even come across some where i was convinced the drum bearings were gone until I took off the belt and spun the drum by hand to find ** **ise.

Central bearing of your machine seems to be worn.

Take a look at repair help here

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

    NOTE:

If noise is when changes direction you must inspect the motor driving belt and probably needs replacement.

    Also pay attention at Clutch

If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician

Let ’s look inside the washing machine, let ’s carefully see the motor in the washing machine.

Why should we? It ’s because then you will believe the LG intellowahser DD is so perfect that it will

    last longer.

Permanent magnet rotor and multi-coiled stator are swapped their place and rotor

    replaces the pulley.

    • Minimum vibration and **ise • ** replacement of BRUSH

    Coil

    Stator

    (Magnetized by current)

    Rotor

    (permanent-magnet)

    Rotating Shaft

    Direct Drive Motor _Without Brush

For the motor to be rotated, rotor and

stator should become a magnet so they

repel each other just like **rth Pole and

South Pole of a magnet repelling each other.

In universal motor, rotor and stator are

coiled and they become magnet by flowing

    electricity.

What delivers electricity to rotor is a

BRUSH. Therefore rotor can**t become a

magnet without BRUSH and it can**t

rotate. If the Brush wears off MOTOR WILL

    STOP!!

Rotor is a permanent magnet therefore it needs ** electricity

    and ** BRUSH

    • ** frictional sound • ** replacement of BRUSH

    BLDC Motor _Without Brush

    Coil

    Stator

    (Magnetized by current)

    Rotor

    (permanent

    magnet)

Coiled rotor needs electricity to be rotated and BRUSH is there

    to deliver electricity.

    • BRUSH makes frictional sound • BRUSH abrades and needs replacement

    Universal Motor-With Brush

    Coil

    Brush

    Stator

    (Magnetized by current)

    Rotor

    (permanent

    magnet)

    Before After

    Direct Drive Motor

    • Quiet & Durable System

    • Conventional System

    What is a Brush

    1. Motor without Carbon Brush

Because the Direct Drive Motor has ** Carbon Brushes, the motor runs like a whisper.

** Brush also means ** extra cost for Brush Replacement.

(Refer to the detail explanation of Brush on the next page)

    2. Direct Drive tech**logy

The motor drives the drum without a flywheel and a driving belt. There are less wearing parts, so

the motor is more reliable, silent and efficient.

    See your manual

    Did you check belt's condition?

  • Kleanthis Mavropoulos
    Kleanthis Mavropoulos Mar 10, 2008

Here you see motor coupling assembly. If you are sure that the noise is not generated by all the other reasons (drive belt, bearing, well seated at floor etc) perhaps this coupling is responsible.

Has your machine been used for a long time?

It sounds as if there is a problem with the tub bearing of the machine, replacing this is a job left to professionals.

You are right!

Bearings have to be replaced. Replace with the same type and design. All the bearings connected to the washer center shaft has to be replaced at the same time with new set.

Replace the water seals also connected to this. Check the shaft where the bearing sits, for any abrasions or metal damage.

Check the bearing housing also. While carrying out these repairs check the drive belt also. If needed replace it.

If you are happy with the machine outer body and other aspects repair it and re-use it.

if the tub spins freely with no power on and makes no noise, chances are the problem is coming from the hall sensor (sensor assembly) which is located on the stator. The part costs around 20$ the part number is 6501KW2002A
