I am assuming IDE not SATA ? did you set the jumpers on the drives themselves? the seagate 80 to master the 20 to slave. The jumpers are on the front of the drives next to the connectors. Next connect to the motherboad behind the master drive or seperately on a 2nd IDE connector. If you are connecting both with one cable make sure the master is added to connector at the end of the cable.

the jumpers are not a ribbon .. the jumpers sit between the IDE connector (connects between the motherboard and the harddrive) and the power connector (connects harddrive to power supply) ... take a look at this illustration
    http://www.seagate.com/images/support/en...

hopefully there were jumpers accompanying the HDD when you bought them, if not you can probably take them from old harddrives or get them at any computer store. Again, you will set the 80 to master and the 20 to slave.

btw .. you will only need one jumper as the slave drive is set to slave with no jumpers, remove the jumper from the 20G slave drive and you should be good to go.

How do i set a seagate barracuda 7200 hd to slave

you don't need to setup as a Slave drive like IDE drives. You simply install the new SATA drive on an open port and follow the steps in this thread to format the hard drive. This will allow the hard drive to be used as a storage drive or whatever you plan to use it for.

Guide: If you installed a new disk but the system can't see it

What's the maximum hard drive I can install in a Compaq SR1420NX I have a 80 hard drive right now I want to install a larger one. Will this computer handle a larger Hard Drive

The BIOS has a max. hard drive size limitation. Check the manual for the maximum size the motherboard can support.
If the maximum size hard disk it can support then you can add a second hard drive in the computer as a SLAVE hard drive to double your disk space capacity.

Duel Hard drive trouble

Your Os should have the main automatically, keep the other drives as slave unless they are usb then they should auto pick up when you start up your pc for sata drives you got to buy sata connectors and make sure your motherboard has more then just 1 sata connection. After you find out how many you have on your motherboard from bottom to top is 123 so if u have 3 then if you want like if you have a music hard drive and you want it to be first then put it at the bottom 2 and so on.. don't forget to set them as slaves

Adding old hard disk. 20 GB Quantum Fireball Ict, in Dell 9200 PC

if it's old it's probably IDE also known as PATA. it looks like a wide ribbon. There should be a header on the motherboard that looks exactly like the plug on the back of the hard drive. It will be labeled IDE1 probably if you have it. Old motherboards used to have 2 IDE headers, modern ones have one or none. The ribbon will have three plugs--one for the mobo, and then two spaced closer together for the master and the slave. You need to hook it to the appropriate plug (master if it's the only device on the ribbon) and make sure the jumpers on the HD are set properly to make it self-identify as the master. Good luck!

The system is looking for the hard drive and can't find it. Open the side panel and make sure the cables are connected securely to the drive and the motherboard. The clicking noise is an indication of a bad drive. Good luck!

Hi silverend,

I have some questions and some recommendations for you...

The original problem of the system not booting might have been temporarily compounded by moving it to a different system as a secondary or slave disk. You'll want to make sure that is not an issue 1st b4 continuing w/ trouble-shooting or testing the failed disk.

(01) Is the hard disk installed in the same computer it was running in properly before?

(02) If not, was it the Master of 1st drive on the previous system - the system where it originally failed? In other words, did it contain a boot volume? (Was it the disk that the system used to boot off of?)

(03) You said the file system is FAT. Is that FAT16 or FAT32?

(04) Does the drive have an operating system on it? If so, what operating system is it?

(05) Are you sure the jumpers are set correctly for the configuration you have it in now (slaved to your master drive)?

(06) Check to see if the drive jumpers are set for LIMITED CAPACITY? (See HERE for more information regarding jumper settings on Seagate hard disks.)

(07) Are you using a MASTER/SLAVE configuration for your two hard drives or are you using CS (cable select)? If you are using CS, both drives must be jumpered to CS and the primary (MASTER) drive should be the LAST drive on the cable (at the end).

The drive may very well be, physically, fine. However, the best way to determine that is to...

1st, Ensure that the jumper settings are correct for its current configuration (slaved to your master hard disk or as a secondary CS disk on the primary EIDE controller) and...

2nd, run diagnostics on a hard disk using boot media rather than from w/in an operating system. This is a much more reliable and thorough means of testing your hard disk.

I recommend that, once you've determined that your jumper configuration are correct (for BOTH hard disks), you run Seagate's boot diagnostics (Seagate Utilities) to test the hard drive.

(07) Do you have any data that needs to be recovered off of this drive? If so, let us know and we'll help you to recover it.

(08) If not, you can use the Seatools diagnostics to write zeros to the drive effectively erasing it and along w/ any corruption. This will allow for a more thorough surface test, too as the diagnostics will test the surface while writing to it. (This is a last result, however. Particularly if you have an operating sytem, data, etc. that you'd like to preserve.)

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ
