Have my Kenmore ELite a year and a half and recently there is a dreadful smell of stagnant/moldy water from the tub and clothes. Have tried washing at a high temp., with bleach, vinegar, etc.. nothing seems to work. I have to keep the door open at all times and it still persists. Called Kenmore and they were of no help. Any suggestions apart from ones already posted, as I have tried them all?
My washing machine and the clothes washed in it have a musty, moldy odor. I have tried bleach but this only eliminates the odor for a few days. I have put baking soda in the machine washes and this helps for a few days as well.
There seems to be a common problem with this where the filter in the bottom of the unit gets plugged, and it can cause the unit to smell. Remove the bottom access panel, unscrew the filter, and clean it. Make sure you UNPLUG the unit. Even though you won't be touching electrical, there is a very real chance that you can be shocked..or worse.
Let me know if that helps. Even if this solution doesn't work, it is a good idea to clean the unit occasionally. It uses a torx style screw, so you may have to buy the tool...but it's worth it.

There will always be some residual water left in the outer tub after draining. This is normal for most washers. Purchase a container of Oxy-clean and cycle the washer a few times using hot water settings with a half-cup of Oxy-clean added to each cycle. This will help remove any organic matter left behind that might be causing odors.
If you have a belt on this machine, I would change it. If the tub bearings are worn, then the motor will spin the belt faster then the tub/drum can turn causing burning. Worn pump or tub bearings can also cause this smell. Make sure pump is clean and tight.
You need to clean the stationary "brush" that collects lint and debris from the water during the cycle. The brush can be seen around the tub directly touching it along the bottom/front of the device. Right were I pour my detergent in, after the cloths are in there. To remove the debris I use a bottle brush. You can expect to use trial and error for your attempts. As far as the water being left.... My device has always left water in the bowl. I periodically just run a cycle with no cloths and bleach...HOT.....Mine is not spinning at the moment...again....I think its another call to the local dealer....AGAIN....
The filter on your pump is probably clogged with lint and
stuff. You have to remove the bottom front panel, 3 torx screws
panel will drop and come off. Drain off the excess water from the hose
see.The white filter cover is right in front.
Get yourself a bunch of towels or a good big plastic bag to collect
Unscrew the filter cover and twist the filter out. Clean out all the
put it back in carefully.
Next: You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits
of soap and other such things can be
stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this product, it works
all front loaders. Use hot water with the Affresh pellet with no clothes
run the machine through a cycle. Also
helps with any stagnant water smells. Have you cleaned out your pump
lately.Put the pellet inside the
machine, not in the soap dispenser.
Pl give me a good rating for the free help, thanks.
I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.
there is always some water left inside the machine and that is probably what you are hearing
are you using liquid detergent?
if so this is almost certainly the cause of the smell. liquid detergent leaves a nasty slime inside thge machine and smells like drains.
put on a boil wash with no clothes and revert to using powder detergent
Set the water level to it's highest level and let it fill on hot. When it starts to agitate, stop the machine and add 2 gallons of hot water to raise the level above the tub ring. Add 2 cups of bleach and 2 cups of powdered dishwashing detergent. Let it agitate for several minutes and stop it again. Let it sit for several hours. Then let it finish it's complete cycle. This should elimate your odor..
