If you have just installed Windows XP on this system, you may need to locate your network interface card (NIC) drivers on the manufacturer's website. Since you do not have network connectivity, this can be done on another computer and use a USB device or a CD/R to transfer them.
It is best to find the model of the computer and search the computer manufacturer's website for correct drivers. If they are not available, then find the NIC type in the specifications of the computer, and search the internet for the drivers for that card.

I have acer aspire m1610 desktop with windows vista. I cannot connect to the internet - just started today. the network adapter shows sis191 ethernet controller. Pc connected to a wireless router via a...

You're showing a wired connection on your network adapter, yet claim that you are connected wirelessly. The firewall has no bearing on this- put it back on (windows firewall, that is). Here is what you should do. Remove your wireless adapter from your computer and shut the computer down. Restart your modem, and after it reboots, then reboot your router. After those two have rebooted, restart your computer, making sure to use another USB port for your wireless adapter- so that it has to be recognized (again) by windows. Let me know how this plays out. Thanks..

Computer does not recognize my external drive.

Basic Troubleshooting:

-Check all connections (Ethernet, Power, USB, etc)
-Install the appropriate driver for the device, usually included on a CD
-Double Check compatibility with your system (system requirements usually on packaging of product)
-If you haven't rebooted since you set it up, then reboot, this fixes a lot of things
-Try the product on another computer
-Try different cables/ports on the comptuer.

If nothing works, then send it in if it's under warranty or contact a professional service.

Installed new version of windows xp pro. does not recognize the ethernet port. not on hardware list

Go to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen and enter in the service tag number. It will then list the drivers off, select and download the ethernet driver. The install program will put the drivers back on the machine and ask you to reboot.

I cannot get the computer to recognize the ethernet connection after fresh install of windows xp pro

You mean you need the ethernet drivers or windows does't reconize the hardware?

If it is the drivers you can download here:

Ethernet not working after format and xp reinstall

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage, then go to the Device Manager in the list on the left and find the Network Adapter from the list on the right, right-click Network Adapter and select Uninstall. When you reboot, XP should find the Adapter and reinstall it automatically. Another reboot may be required.

If it still will not connect, go to the NIC Manufacturer's website and download the driver to removable media. The Driver Update option can be accessed in the Device Manager, but this time select Properties when you right-click the Network Adapter, and go to the Driver tab.

Connecting modem via ethernet cable

I'm not an expert in window based units but since it worked with Vista OS and not with XP. Sounds like you might try re-installing XP again. Take note on any windows that refer to the ethernet port during installation. It is likely you might of hit "next" without reading all the text. I know I have in the past. I changed over to mac and I know longer have any problems only at work but give then I give it to the IT Dept and wait and wait and wait.
