With some (most) of the new viruses that are floating around you will have to reinstall your OS to get rid of it. You can sometimes remove it with an antivirus program, but usually it ends up resurfacing again within a week or 2 because the virus leaves little pieces of itself all over in your computer. Often antivirus programs will overlook the little pieces because they are inactive and not posing any kind of threat. Back-Up your stuff and reinstall your OS. Scan your Backed-Up files before reinserting them into your freshly installed OS.
Yep a virus, you can either get antivirus or my suggestion is to back up music/pictures and essentially take the computer back to factory with a factory install disc.
Those are best options
Usually this is caused by cluttering of the hard drives, or by acquiring a virus/spyware/malware/Trojan while visiting the internet.
Solutions:
Hard drive cluttering:
- Defragment your hard drives often (at least once a month)
- Empty your recycle bin (when files are deleted they go to the recycle bin until you empty it)
- Empty your temp files and your Internet temp files folders
o If you use Windows Internet Explorer clean your temp files and cookies often
o Reduce the length of the history from default 20 days to about 3 days
- If you use MS Outlook empty your deleted items and the Junk E-mail folders often
Virus/Spyware/etc...
- Turn on Windows Firewall
- Invest in a good antivirus program
And finally in your particular case, update your system to service pack 3 directly from Microsoft.com
Also turn on your automatic update service, to keep your system running the latest versions of drivers and other improvements and fixes to your operating system.
Computers require maintenance and updating to perform at their best.
Hope this helps.
