Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

Maxtor External HD - The device cannot start. (Code 10)

Maxtor 3200 X HD

I've had it over a year and now it won't show in my drives. The PC recognizes it, but says there was an error installing the device. I have tried power cycling the device and rebooting the PC many times. I've gone to the device manager and uninstalled and reinstalled the device. Have tried updating drivers. The exact error it keeps coming up with when going to device manager is "The device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I feel nauseous - there is a lot of stuff on there.

It has worked for about a year. Now, with it plugged in, the computor will not restart. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. I get code 10 can not start message.

I had the same problem. After trying everything suggested on multiple sites, I realized that I had connected the power supply for another device to my Maxtor external drive. When I found the right pwer supply and connected it, the problem resolved.

You have a bad power supply. I've had two of these fail for the same reason. Please view my post on the Seagate Knowledge Base website.

I had a similar problem with my pc( OS=XP SP2) with the same external drive model. I was able to solve it by downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB908673-x86-ENU Hotfix Package from Microsoft Corporation. I hope it works for you.

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

Maxtor Basics 320 GB external harddrive cant be recognized

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Look into the computer bios / setup and see if the drive is detected there.

to get into the bios or setup press the button indicated on the screen right when you turn the computer on, it can be either F1 F2, f10, del, space, esc depends. it should say on the screen.

Hey guys I had the same problem... All the drivers for the device are inside the harddrive. Maxtor doesn't have any because you don't need any. What they've neglected to let any of us know is the power supply provided with the unit isn't powerful enough to run it. Replace the original power supply with another one and this will solve the problem. I replaced mine with an old laptops power supply, the fit was alittle tight but believe me it works.

My Maxtor 3200 died also. I took the following steps to get it running again.
(1) Remove plastic box from around unit. Carefully stick a screwdrive in the case division and pry it apart. It is not easy, but do will finally come apart.
(2) inside you will find a perforated metal box. There are two screw on each side of the box. Remove and separate the two halves.
(3) there you will discover that inside is just an ordinary Maxtor hard drive like you would buy in the electronics store. Attached to the HD is a PC board. There are 3 screws holding the PC board down. Remove the screws and carefully remove the HD and PC board.
(4) unplug the powere plug and the IDE interface from the HD. Now you have a HD that you can install in your own case (as long as you have a desktop unit and not a laptop).
(5) I installed the HD in an empty slot, connected the IDE cable that was already there (between the CD and IDE interface), plugged in the power plug, fired 'er up, and voila, works like a champ.

I suspect that the problem is in the interface (PC board), since the only thing I did was remove that from the equation. Hope this helps

Kudos! Thanks!

Maxtor 3200 error message

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If it doesn't make any unusual sounds and doesn't show up in BIOS - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.  if it is recognized with full capacity and only files are unreadable - try to scan it with demo version of some software like R-Studio or GetDataBack.

My Maxtor 3200 ext. drive which I had for one year now (no pbs.) not being recognized by my system and I see a Code 10 error in the Device Manager.

first you can use your troubleshooter in your device manager to find out what that code 10 error is or you can go to the maxtor website in the support or troubleshoot section and tell them your code 10 error,it might be a driver needs to be updated.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 problem!!!

I will tell you how to solve it, but this will void your warranty!
I had the same problem. What i was intended to open the box take the HD and use it as an internal HD.
When I opened the box I saw the HD jumpers were set on Cable Select I picked the jumper and plugged it to Master. Plugged it back to AC power and USB. It works. I donno why but it just worked.
Good Luck!
