Often when I hold down the left shift key it adds an extra character. Someone called it a pipe character. The keyboard is only a year old and this started two months ago. The model is KB0401

Try downloading the latest driver from the gateway website and try reinstalling it:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp
If that doesnt work, you may want to replace the keyboard..
