Question about Samsung PCN5425R 54" Rear Projection Television

PCN5425R Fading in and out

Hello everyone,

I have the Samsung TV mentioned in the subject line, it is about 4 years old. Lately, the picture has started fading in and out, almost as if someone was screwing with the brightness control. It'll be fine for a few minutes, but then suddenly fade almost to black, then get bright again a few seconds later. Occasionally it seems as if it is just a single color fading in and out, but other times the entire picture does this.

I see a lot of mention on here about convergence amps, but I don't think that's it as the picture is 100% perfectly aligned and looks great, except for the fading. Could it simply be the lamp(s)?

Hitting the case makes no difference and there do not appear to be any loose connections. There is a hint of dust covering everything, so I could not clearly inspect individual solder joints (plus there are hundreds in there and I don't really know where to start!)

I ran the TV with the back cover off and did not see any visible arching.

I have also noticed that the problem goes away if the set is cold. If it has sat off for a few hours, it will operate 100% fine for a good 30 - 40 minutes before the problem comes back. So, to me it seems like some part inside must be overheating or failing in some similar mode.

I agree that it sounds like a problem in the power supply and not convergence, but I have no idea how to proceed with troubleshooting other than to just order parts haphazardly and try them. I would greatly appreciate any tips to narrow the problem. You mentioned the horizontal flyback transformer - how would I test that? Also, there are three or four parts on samsungparts.com that have names similar to that, what is the difference?

Should I cough up the $28 and order the Samsung service manual for my box? I really like this TV and would like to keep it vs. spending a grand or two on replacement.

No It is not the picture tube.
First, I would suspect a bad solder connection (cold solder connection) to find this problem hit the side cassing to see if the picuture goes away or comes back.
Another way is take the back cover off and tap gently on the boards with something not conductive or your hair would look like mine. The most commond section is power supply and neer the Horizontal flyback transformor.
The horizontal transformor look at it, it's a big greyish darty little thing about 3" x 4" and stand up about 4" with a big red wire going out of it. Don't touch it, it has very high voltages, just look what it done to my hair I'm telling you don't touch it along with it's red lead's. Just look to see if it is arking if so replace it.

When you have convegence problem , it is mis aligment of the colours in the genmentry aligments.
I would suspect more in the power supply section.

Regards

Your convergence ic’s have failed, this is a common problem with most all projection tv’s, the repair is involved. I suggest in your case calling a local repair shop.

Sounds like the digital convergence controls is possibly the item giving you the problem, if you have already changed the convergence board. You can get a used digital convergence board at the following link, just leave them a email and state your model number and what your needing.

Red convergence way off

Hello,
I had the same issue as you pretty much exactly and so do others right around this last few weeks so I am thinking that this is a common problem with the product itself.

You can fix this pretty quickly with the link below. I bought it and it resolved the issue.

You will need to locate the convergence amp IC's, the STK392-040, and replace both of them. The originals IC's can be ordered here http://www.mcminone.com/search.asp?keyword=STK392-040&btnSubmit.x=4&btnSubmit.y=6 Good Luck

Convergence: concave picture with double image

An easy replacement on the Samsubgs is to replace the convergence board. If you are doing this yourself it is just a plug in board. Here is a link for the part number and how to purchase it. http://www.partstore.com/Part/Samsung/Samsung/PCN5425/Samsung/Samsung/BP9400383A/New.aspx
