If the laptop shuts down and won't boot up again until it has cooled down, then the laptop is overheating and causes the CPU to shutdown. If this fault is not fixed then eventually the CPU will fail.
The fan may not be covered with dust, but did you check the heat-sink?
The heat-sink fins maybe clogged with dust.
Check the fan, does it spin freely, if not the fan maybe faulty and needs to be replaces.

My emachine shutdown suddenly while playing games

Hello the is the homepage:

Your pc is probably overheating, due too many programs opened at one time, or dust in the cpu cooling fan.

Try to clean the cooling fan element:

It`s probably blocked by dust.
A pc repair shop, can help you with cleaning your pc, if you have no experience with that.

Try not to use a laptop, for big games, they will not last long.

Good luck

TOO HIGH TEMPERATURES AT MY LAPTOP ACER ASPIRE 5735Z

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

Dell d610 shuts down while playing games

Some games require more processor use, some less.

If the games that cause your computer to shut down feature high resolution graphics or fast 3D rendering, then the problem could be insufficient processor cooling. Once the processor gets overheated, it goes into thermal shut down.

If, while you play, the computer runs hot before it shuts down (check the cooling fan outlet), then these are some of the possible reasons:

-cooling fan blades could be obstructed by dust - cooling fan needs to be cleaned or replaced

-heatsink radiator and / or air outlet could be obstructed by dust - also need(s) to be cleaned

-thermally conductive grease on the microprocessor heatsink could be
partially or entirely dried up - old grease needs to be carefully removed and new grease applied (caution - do not use any kind of thermal grease that contains metallic particles like silver or aluminium - you might short out the processor - only use the kinds which are electrically nonconductive)

of course the problem could be elsewhere, but the above mentioned problems turn out to be a common issue with many laptop computers after a few years use, regardless of manufacturer brand and model, also it could be any of or the combination of any or all of the above problems (obstructed air outlet leads to more dust being deposited on the fan blades, more dust on the fan and outlet leads to processor overheating which leads to thermal grease drying which leads to even more overheating and so on...)

hope this helps somewhat

My sony laptop suddenly shut down itself when am playing a game. it shuts with a certain sound

Laptops are very often overheating, so it wouldn't be a surprise if you playing the game makes it even hotter and it just shuts down to protect itself from damage.
You can try using a cooling pad/fan or just make sure the laptop fans can circulate air freely.

My computer shuts down while im playing a game

This laptop was not designed to be a games machine, so the stress on the CPU will be quite high, generating a lot of heat. If the fan is unable to dissipate the heat from the cpu, but more importantly from the graphics chip, the laptop will shut down to stop damage.

What I suggest is that you open up the laptop and clean the area around the heatsink and fan and inlet grille, even a mild build up of dust and fluff will cause the temperature of the laptop to rise 10 or more degrees. Eventually overheating will cause the graphics chip to unsolder.

I have a compaq laptop presario X13 04657 and it is overheating. The fan makes a really loud noise before it shuts down. The computer gets really hot. Any suggestions?

1) is the fan still working?
2) Turn the computer off, remove the bottom cover and clean up the inside by blowing compressed air into it. Be sure to remove all the dust and lint you see. Check the fan moves easily.
3) replace the bootom cover and try again
4) DO NOT use your laptop on top of a soft surface. That means no pillows and no blankets or any other type of fabric under your laptop. Do not use it on top of your bed either. Only on top of HARD surfaces.
5) Avoid playing any intense 3D GAMES. Most laptops are NOT designed for game playing

Acer

Hi There , Remove the bottom cover of your notebook, You'll see in the corner there is a little fan,
1. Make sure that fan spins when you turn the notebook on.
2. Make sure that the airvents are clean, they might be blocked with dust.

That causes the Processor to get to hot, and then when it reaches a certain temp it shuts down, and you wont be able to turn it on until it cools down....Good luck, It's really easy to clean just blow it out, using a blower or some sort...

My laptop becomes too hot & it shut downs suddenly when I use any big applications like turbo c or playing any game or when I try to write any cd through it. After few minutes its fan starts spinning very...

Sounds like you have a hardware fan & vent, the CPU shuts down when it gets too hot.
Check the fan, it should spin freely, clean the dust off the fan and heatsink assembly. Replace the fan if necessary.
When you use the laptop, make sure none of the vents are covered.

Laptop turns off

Sounds like a heat issue. All laptops have a way of dispelling heat from the processor. First, see if you're using it in an environment where these ports are being covered up. Second, if your laptop has cooling fans, see if theyre working (look on the bottom or sides depending on the model). Check for dust buildup on or around the heat vents or fans. If dusty, invest in a can of compressed air, and blow the dust out of the vents and/or fans. Finally, many computer stores carry cooling lappads. You can try one of those and see if your issue resolves.
