We need your manufacturer and model number to be of maximum assistance, but the most likely possibilities are:
1) The file is not in a format recognized by the player - if you have an mp3 player that only plays mp3 or WMA files, then it will not play iTunes files, for instance
2) The file you are transferring has DRM encryption, and your player does not support DRM-encryption (or the reverse - the file does not have encryption, and needs to be encrypted)

Give us your model/manufacturer, and we will tell you exactly what that msg means.

The music has downloaded and I can play it from the mp3 player on the computer but not when I try to play it unplugged from the computer. I turns on but says "unknown format" on the player.

What does unknown format mean? Why can't i play music?

what this means is that you are trying to play an audio file on your mp3 player that is not supported by the player and thus it will not play. in order to make the audio file in question play, you will need to convert it into a readable format that is listed by the player it's self. to do this, find out what type of audio file it is (this can be determined be the file extention [.mp3, .mp4, .wav, .m4a, .flac] assuming your computer is set to allow you to see it. though most operating systems will display the file type in the info bar.) then search for "[insert format here] to mp3 converter" and purchase the software required. most of this software is relatively cheep and works on more than one file type.
