When I insert the SD card and start the F20 unit I can see the maps loading via the message bottom LH screen. When I try to recover the maps, the unit only displays options for the pre-loaded UK/Ireland set.
How can I check that the maps are correctly loaded? and How do I change the maps?

If you have the TOPO maps loaded to an SD card and the card is inserted all you should have to do is go to Tools > Settings > Map > Info in this menu you will find your map sets if you see TOPO make sure it is activated if not you may need to re install them to the SD.
the "no SD required" is just letting you know that all of the important stuff to make the unit run is all on the hard drive of the unit itself. Yes you can use a SD card to hold maps, photos, or music. For instance if you were going to Europe, you will be able to get a European Map and download it onto the SD card. Another instance would be if you wanted to download some mp3 files.
Normally the sd card holds the programme and the maps so the satnav will not run without it. If it is already in place, take it out, wipe over the contacts with a dry cloth and reinsert it. If there is no sd card then it will not work-it has no programme.
This problem is due to the memory card not containing the TomTom application or map. To update the application onto the memory card
Connect the device to your computer.
Open the TomTom Home application.
Click on 'Update My Device'.
This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you updat.
A way around this is to insert the SD Card into the computer (SD Card reader), point the directory to the card and install the maps like that. I had to do that the first time I bought my unit because I couldn't figure it out and got frustrated. So I thought of this easy work-around.
You cannot replace American maps with European maps. Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers. The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.
