I would suspect it is something else, unless you got your ear, hand or stethoscope on the Alt to hear it. The alt bearings may be going bad. Should hear that ,running with a stethoscope on it.

when the battery is not working it cud be the altinator that has went out because the altinator is what puts energy to the battery, both altinator and battery has to be working properly for the engine to start..you can find anything you need here>>>www.discountbargainprices.com
Replace the alternator. When the pulley shaft makes noise, the sealed bearing has failed. You cannot or would not take it apart to replace the bearing. You just replace the whole alternator.
To be certain, take off the belt and spin the pulley. If it makes noise or feels rough spinning, it is bad.
What model and make is your truck?
Older vehicles differ widely from later ones. Is the regulator separate from the alternator? If so, you might need to replace the regulator.
On some vehicles, the regulator was booted by the indicator lamp on the dash. If the light does not work (blown), the alternator does not charge.
Sounds like a belt is slipping. Most probably the altinator belt. Its just a case of tightening it up. In most cases this is done by looseing the altinator a bit and pushin it to make the belt tighter
Sounds like a bad idler or altinator bearing. Try spraying the components with WD40 or if the belt is old and streched could cause the idler bearing to HUM.......Hope this helps.
it could be starter or altinator try another battery if it starts with that its your altinator if it was your starter it would make a clicking or whiring noise when you try to start it.
Definitely sounds like it's time to replace the starter. To verify make sure your getting 12v on the small gauge wire at the starter while trying to crank. If you have power at that wire while cranking replace the starter.
try the altinator
run the car take positive of if the car runs altinator is good
if the car dies the altinator is dead
aslo check how old battery is and the top up levels
