Use a memory device such as a rewritable DVD or external hard drive to back up the data you need to save from your eMachines computer. Any data that isn't saved to an external source will be erased when the computer is restored to factory settings.
Remove any discs that are in the optical drive and unplug the computer's peripheral devices, such as an Ethernet cable or scanner. Do not disconnect the keyboard and mouse. Bring up the "Start" menu and choose "All Programs."
Navigate to "eMachines" and then "eMachines Recovery Management." Click the tab labeled "Restore," which is located at the top of the window.
Click "Password Settings" if you have not already set a recovery password. Type a new password in the text box and then click "OK." Click "Restore System to Factory Default."
Type the recovery password and click "OK." Click "Next" to wipe the eMachines computer's hard drive and begin the recovery process.
Select "Finish" and wait for the eMachines computer to restart. Use the series of installation prompts that appears on the screen to create a new user account for your operating system, set the system date and time, and set up your Internet settings.
