Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

PDF Documents. Pdf reader(s)

Hello and welcome to fixya.

On this page I will show you a few different programs for reading PDF files on your computer, PC, MAC and Pocket PC / phone devices.

Note that these are all FREE programs and you do not need to pay anything for them, if you somehow pay for one of these programs you have made a mistake, try to get your money back.
(Except the Pocket pc / phone application, there are free alternatives for that as well, but for this tip I only included the official Adobe LE which is 15 $)

For PC (Windows xp and newer)

I would recommend Adobe PDF reader, OR a smaller simpler program would be FOXIT READER.

My personal preference is the foxit reader as it is smaller and it is faster to install, the adobe pdf reader takes more space but its a great product.

I transferred a PDF file from the Reader library on my MAC to the device but am only able to see about 18 of 484 pages. I checked the files on my MAC and in the Reader while attached to the MAC and I can see the whole book. Also, the device shows total # of pages 489 and I can see the last few pages of the book. Why am I unable to read all the pages on my device?

I am not an expert on PDF's and I also have no experience with Apple OS, but I use a Sony PRS-600 and I thought of something that may possibly help you.

There could be some formatting commands or conditions contained within your PDF file that conflict with the Sony software and prevent portions of the file from being accessed. I suggest you try to reformat the file to see if you can get a "clean" version of the file. To do this you will have open the document and select "Print", however this is done on the MAC. This will send the opened file to a virtual printer and format it into a PDF file, hopefully creating a fresh copy that will be readable on the Sony.

In order for to you to be able to "print" PDF files you will need to install a suitable print driver.. I assume there are print drivers for the MAC, just as there are for the PC. Check the following website for more information on PDF printing on MAC's.

There are numerous other websites dedicate to the download of freeware that can help you set this up.

For example -
http://download.cnet.com/Convert-to-PDF/3000-2084_4-10914935.html?tag=mncol;7

Having enabled your computer to print PDF's, open the PDF file in question on your MAC. Make sure, as mentioned in your message that all pages are accessible, then select the print command and re-print the file to PDF again. Transferring the file to the Sony device will then confirm if this approach is successful. This is not a proven solution but worth trying nonetheless. Good luck.

SETTING PAGE TO LANDSCAPE

The factory-stock 1940, which uses Windows Mobile 2003, doesn't offer landscape mode.

You can get a 3rd party program called Nyditot Virtual Display that will let you use the 1940 in landscape mode, but I've used it before, and although it works, the problems it creates are not worth it. Besides, that program's not free.

Adobe offers a pdf reader for free that let's you read pdf files in landscape mode.
