Can you set default to print using only black ink?

The printer will not let me print using black until I change one of the colored inks. Is there not a way to tell it to ignore the empty cartridge and use only black?

Wow, what an incredibly unhelpful answer. Thanks, HP shill.

The answer is no. Selling ink is how printer companies make money, and they will do everything possible to make you buy more ink, even when you don't need it.

Color problems stem from your print cartridge or from your printer settings. Obviously, as a cartridge runs out of ink, colors will fade or disappear. Nozzles can also clog. Most printers include software utilities (including one for cleaning nozzles) that let you clean and align cartridges and print heads. You can usually access these utilities from an Advanced or manufacturer-specific tab in the printer’s Properties dialog box. Run both utilities several times if necessary.

If you’re sure the cartridge isn’t to blame, make sure you have updated drivers and the correct paper type for your job. Next, check the print quality and paper type settings in your printer Properties dialog box and in your application’s print settings. Printing Draft quality jobs can often result in strange color output. Your printer’s configuration utilities may also have color management controls. Find them either as part of your printer’s Properties dialog box (click the Color or Advanced tabs) or in a separate application installed as part of the printer setup process. Use these to adjust Tone, Brightness, Levels, and other settings.

How can I get my HP 6500a plus printer to PERMANENTLY default to black printing? I am needlessly using too much color and the default setting is only for a single document.

Go to right click at the printer icon on your computer and choose printer properties or printing preferences and from there choose the color setting to print in black alone. Regards

I want to use black ink only and stop wasting color ink

Go to Control Panel->Printers. Then right click on your printer and select printing preferences. There you will see an option like Print in Grayscale or Black and White only.
However, please note that some printers although they are set to print in grayscale they also use the color cartridge and some even don't allow you to print in grayscale if the color cartridge is empty. Why is that? Manufacturer's way of charging you more money.

Why does color ink in Photosmart C7280 go down when you are only printing using black ink

Unless you set the printer settings to black and white it mixes colored ink to create black. It does this by default. Go to start printers and faxes. Right click on printer icon.Click printing preferences to change this.If youre using hp tool box setting is grayscale black only.
Hope this helps.

Changing ink default to BLACK

Not possible.
Epson uses the black cartridge mostly, but also adds color to the black printing in order to keep the color inks from drying in the print jets on the printhead.
They also make lots of money that way...

Printer problems

This will sound stupid, but if you are trying to print a document in B&W with this particular model, you have to force it to print ONLY using the black ink cartridge, if you are out of color ink, otherwise, it will try to use the color cartridge by default. A highlighted word is not recognized as a black image with a colored background, it is recognized as a multi-colored image, s-o-o-o try going into your solutions menu, click on "Change settings" then click on "Printer settings" Then click on "Maintenance" tab, click on the "Ink Cartridge settings" button. From the drop-down menu, select "Black Only". Click on okay. THEN when you go to print the document go to your printer settings and click on the "grayscale printing" checkbox. Then Select "Plain paper" Of course, you have to do this each time you want to print. The MP470 is primarily a photo printer, with text and graphics abilities. It wasn't designed as an all-purpose printer... I found that out the hard way! :-) Unfortunately, this only works (so far as I've seen) if you are out of color ink... it tries to use color by default to 'create' black... I hope this helps out!

Epson styus cx5000

Go into Printers, Properties, Printing Preferences, then Black Ink Only. If you make that the default, it will automatically print black ink with you click on the printer in the toolbar. If you want to print one document in color, click on File, Print, Properties, and set it for color for that one job only. The default of Black Ink should stay the same.

Black printing morphs into red after black ink cartridge installation

Your printer creates it's black by using ALL the colours together. This effectively gives a very dark purple rather than black.

It sounds like you have a colour cart that is drying up or may be struggling to get enough air into the cartridge. Make sure you have removed any tape over the vent holes if you are using compatible inks. If not then try running a couple cleaning cycles via the button panel/driver.

If you alter the settings in the driver by going into START - PRINTERS AND FAXES and then right click on your 2610 and select PROPERTIES - the changes you make in here will be set as the default settings for each print job.
