When I turn on our Toshiba laptop the screen is black. The Toshiba name comes on the screen but then goes blakc. The power appears to stay on.

seems like a problem with graphics adapter.

try boot using a bootable cd, if there is no screen appearing you may need to check you laptop motherboard and power supply .

Check the power supply and the back light inverter board.

The plug is loose in the back where the power cord is
Bend the power cord up or down until it comes on and stays on!

Try putting on an external monitor, if the external monitor stays on while the laptop lid goes out, your laptop monitor (lid) is going out (yes it happens quite a bit).

If the external monitor goes off also, Check all your power settings and video settings for the laptop (power setting can be found with the screensaver section of the desktop settings) - if all that is as it should be - it means it is your video card, and since the video card is mounted (intigrated) on the motherboard, there is not much more to do than replace the motherboard or get a new laptop.

maybe the power input is error
the uncorrect power input will result bad
or, it's your mobo broken

It sounds like video card problem. Bring it to a repair shop.

change your flexible wire (vga) connected from board to the screen, also change your module, the module is at the rear of the screen.
