Your convergence circuit in the unit is bad in this model i have seen it be just bad solder connections on up to changing the amp chips and associated resistors in the supply ciruit. usually a shop job requiring major solder work and parts cjange or even a whole circuit board change. you need to get an estimate from a qualified tech.

Hello i have a sony KP-46WT510 model 45" TV, and

Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets and a fairly simple DIY fix.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

47a7bc4.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video.

Pic of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

Set after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc

My has a double picture with a red ghostly picture in the background. Any information on how to fix the problem? I have changed the cables, viewed the different colors, tv input, and looked over the menu....

Hello,
It's a convergence issue. Go into the main TV menu under video settings and look for convergence. If it has an auto convergnce select that and wait a minute the TV will adjust itself and give you a clear picture.
If the TV does not have an auto convergence and just regular convergence than select this. It will give you a grid pattern on your TV and you have to move the curser (using TV remote) and adjust each "point" so that each line is perfectly white. If you notice red or blue anywhere on that "line" then you have to adjust using the up, down, left and right arrow keys to "line up the red and blue lines with the nearest white line. It taked time and patience to do, but when completed, all lines on the grid pattern should be pure white and you will have a great looking picture.
You have to do this will all TV inputs (Video1, Video2 and so on) the reason Zoom looks good, is because you never used that screen as much and so the lenses didn't have a chance to get out of synch.
RPTV's are made of the three lenses (red, Blue and Green) and as you watch TV, these lenses slowly get out of alignment. So you should do a convergence about twice a year to make sure nothing is out of whack. Please run the convergence feature on your TV. Its giving you duble image because the red, green, and blue guns are disaligned. By running convergence it will realign the guns properly. You need to run the convergence feature at leat onece a week. Please note this is only for CRT rear projection tv's and I assumed it was. If it is an LCD rear projection, then there's nothing you can do to fix such thing, but call a repair person. But if doing the convergence doesn't fix the problem, you need to call a repair person. But I hope you won't have to. Please refere to your tv's manual on how to do converegence and how to overlap the crosses because every CRT projection tv is different.
Good luck

It needs to be repaired by having the convergence ICs replaced or resoldered (if intermittent).

Parts are STK 392-570. Be sure to use thermal paste on the ICs.

Convergence problem TV won't let me align the

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. Here is there link.

They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.

I was just given this t.v because friends couldn't figure out what is wrong with itl. The colors don't line up right, looks kinda blurry depending on the lighting of the program being watched. How do i fix...

According to the manual:
1) go to the "TV Main Menu"
2) Select "Screen"
3) Select Adjust Projection TV (obviously only if a projection TV).
This then allows you to adjust the TV's 3-colors. Selecting GREEN CENTERING brings up a control panel that lets you center the green projection tube on the screen. Selecting RED CONVERGENCE or BLUE CONVERGENCE lets you align the Red & Blue projector tubes. Centre the green projector tube 1st. Then adjust the red & blue until the test pattern on the TV screen appers white.
Good Luck!

Ghosting in Red, Green and blue

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...
