Hello..try to search for a site called "Abandonware" through ex. google and look for serial drivers if you are usig the series port for your mouse...the name of your mouse maybe on a label on the bottom....but you can also try some "generic" routines...it is good if you know exactly what type of computer you are using...please tell me how it went...good luck...Ron

I need to know a few things first: Computer make and model, mouse make and model, and operating system. Also, do you mean it won't POST, or won't load the OS?

Thanks,

Keith

Frankly there is no security on Win98. To get into the machine just type in a new username and password.

do you have a wired or wireless mouse?
Have you tried attaching a different mouse to your computer?
What is the brand name of your mouse?

Try booting your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, after turning on the computer, press F8 button several times. You will see a screen that will ask you to boot normally, boot in Safe Mode or boot in Safe Mode with Network Connections. Select Safe Mode.

See if your mouse works then.

Check back with me for further help, if needed. There are additional things you could try.

I am trying to change my microsoft mouse to a compaq mouse without software, how and can that be done?

should be an easy swap (esp if it's USB). Simply remove one and insert the new one from the USB port.

If it's an older style PS/2 port, you'll want to power down the machine first, make the swap and boot up.

Shouldn't require software beyond what Windows has built in (assuming you're running Windows).

Wireless mouse and keyboard issues

If you have both sets of keyboard and mouse plugged in, turn off the computer and remove the old mouse and plug in the new mouse. Reboot and if necessary use the keyboard to login. Once windows is loaded let it detect the new mouse and then shut down again. Take out the old keyboard and reboot. You should now be able to use both new pieces without problems.

Vga driver

If you know what the name of the generic vga driver that's missing, you can start the computer in MS-DOS mode (if I recall correctly, you can do that in win98), then edit the boot.ini and add it in. If not, you're out of luck and need the Windows 98 CD. Since you already own a license of Windows 98, it should be legal for you to download a copy (but I'm not a legal expert and this is not legal advice).
