I bought this HP1040i for $20.00 after rebate from Fry's my computer OS Windows xp professional service pack 3, It can read only bootleg copies but not Original dvd movies. It came with Nero 9 Essentials. Do you have any solutions to this problem?

This is normally due to a lens issue. If you have tried a cleaning disc (one with iso-propyl alcohol solution) and it still does not work, you can also remove the cover, and use a qtip (ear bud) with some iso-propyl alcohol to clean the lens.
Mine for example the lens was clean, but a cat hair was stuck in such a way that it interfered with the laser, but would not come lose. a simple tweeze, hair gone problem gone.
Unfortunately if the two cleaning steps yield no results, it is better to replace the drive, as repairing it cost more in time and labor than to replace.
Hope this helps.

Disc drive stopped recognizing discs

This is fairly common, it means the actual DVD drive has failed. You will need to call Nintendo. There is a good chance it is still under warranty and they will fix it for free. Their number is 1-800-255-3700

Not recognizing disc in D drive

Hi, well the short answer is NO. You cannot use DVD's in a CD Writer at all. So the simple answer is to get some CD-R and copy the files to them. OR get a Combo DVD/CD writer and install that as well.. and then you can use both..
