2.0 USB External Interface Compatible w Compaq USB Ports????

I am about to buy an external hard drive for backup and it is described as having a 2.0 USB interface. Will this devide work with the USB ports provided on my Presario 4403US Tower?

USB 2.0 is just faster.
If you have USB 1.0 ports on the computer the new drive will revert to that speed.

I have the Lacie Minidisk Ethernet 500 GB that contains all my house PC backup. I both an USB Minidisk Lacie (1 GB) in order to use MySafe feature but it never worked.

Use MySafe to back up the files stored on the Ethernet Disk mini Home to an attached USB storage device. This way, if files on the Ethernet Disk mini are damaged or accidentally deleted, you can restore them to their original locations.
There are three main steps to using MySafe,Connecting an external USB hard drive,Backing up files to the external USB hard drive,Restoring files to the Ethernet Disk mini (if necessary)
Before you can back up files, you need to connect a hard drive to your Ethernet Disk mini via the USB port on the back. Use a hard drive that is USB 2.0 compatible.
While connecting an external hard drive make sure your Ethernet Disk mini is turned on and connected to your network.Turn on the external USB hard drive.Connect the external hard drive's USB cable to the USB port on the back of the Ethernet Disk mini, just like you would connect the external hard drive to your computer.Confirm that the drive is properly connected. Log in and click on the Administer HipServ link. Click on USB External Storage under System.
To back up files, navigate to the file or folder you want to back up to the external hard drive and click on the disk icon in the "Backup" column of the file list.When you back up files to MySafe, the Ethernet Disk mini duplicates the file path in MySafe so that everything you back up is organized in MySafe just as in its original location. So, if you copy a file from MyLibrary, a MyLibrary folder will appear in MySafe, with all folders leading to the backed up file.

Always click the Safely Remove Drive button on the USB External Storage before unplugging your MySafe external hard drive. Wait for the interface to change and for the Use Drive button to appear before disconnecting the USB cable from the Ethernet Disk mini. Failure to safely remove your external hard drive before disconnecting the USB cable can cause data loss and/or damage the drive. Always use the Safely Remove Drive feature when disconnecting an external hard drive.

Hi sexybarneygu, Assuming you have tried other USB ports getting the same problem, I recommend you return it (if it's under warranty) if not, remove the Hard Drvie from the casing and connect it to another computer internally (I dont want you to get another external case for you Hard drive because you hard drive MIGHT be the one with the problem and you cant fix it (you can't fix hard drives, just work around it in order to get your data back and then trow it away). If the other computer sees your hard drive ok, then go buy an external case and install your hard drive there. make sure it's the same interface - most likely SATA interface. I'm 80% sure it's just the casing not the hard drive. Don't forget to rate if my answer helped you. Thank you :D

USB's slow and external drive


For the USB ports, you may want to verify that the drivers for the "enhanced USB" are up to date and for USB 2.0 or 1.1. USB 2.0 ports are generally backwards compatible for 1.1 devices. The "enhanced" does indicate USB 2.0 controller. 30mins to backup 3GB to your external drive is a VERY long time. USB 2.0 transfers data up to 480mbps, but if you get an error message indicating that the device can perform faster on a 2.0 port, you maybe transferring data at 12mbps which is USB 1.1 speed

To speed up the transferring of data, identify which USB contoller in Device Manager is the USB port you're having a problem with, and delete it from Device Manager. Then, plug in your external drive into a USB port its never used before.

As for the naming of hard drives, Hitachi partners with several drive manufacturers including Dell and IBM.

My d610 does not recognize my cd drive


Is the USB-compatible drive recognized when connected to some other computer? If OK, then the drive is OK.

Is _ANY_ USB device (memory-stick, camera, mouse, keyboard, printer) recognized when connected to any of the USB ports on your computer?
If not, then the USB device-drivers for Windows have not been loaded.

Drastic: backup all your data files, bookmarks, and music, to an external hard-drive, and reinstall Windows from the Dell-provided "System Restore" set of CD-ROMs.

compaq tend to have removable CD drives, just by undoing 1 screw on the underside you may be able to remove the drive, then you just order a replacement.

for an external CD drive any USB drive will do, it's not compatibility with your laptop that is the concern, you just have to make sure that it does what you want, make sure you get one with an external power supply as compaq usb ports tend to be low power ports, and bus powered drives try to draw too much power when burning disks

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive


There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****
