Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Washer Lid Seal

After having the Calypso washer for three years, I have noticed that when I open the lid after doing a load of wash, water drains from the seal on the lid onto the clothes. These are not just a few drops either. Is the seal gone or is this quite natural with this washer. As this wets the clothes again, I usually run another spin cycle or interrupt the final spin to empty the seal and continue with the spin. Is there anything wrong with the machine needing service? Thanks!

I ordered the part so let's see if it works. I can't quite figure out how it would go on right now but I'll wait and see what comes with the package. I also noted that water circulating in the detergent reservoir could possibly be spilling over the edge and into the seal so will try to observe that with the next wash load.

I ordered the part you described and it arrived today, but that is not the problem. It is with the circular seal on the underside of the lid. Water accumulated on the top of this round seal so, when the lid is opened, the water falls on the clothes. As I said, I don't know if the water comes during the rinse cycle or from the soap reservoir (the swirling water). I was relatively small loads, so now I will have to see if that is the problem.

Our calypso does the same thing. Lift the lid, drench the clothes. Did a new seal work?

same issue, water collects inside the circular lid seal and dumps out on to my clothes upon opening the lid at the end of wash cycle

I have the same problem. This started 9-12 months ago - and wasn't doing it before then. From my trying to see where problem is - It doesn't seem to be a seal, because it is holding water within that seal. I would think that the water should drain from that seal during processing/washing/spinning so it won't be there when you open lid - - - OR water should not be getting up in that lip in the first place.

The seal shouldn't be doing what you've described. It would probably be a good idea to replace it at this point if its causing you to have to run the washer through another spin cycle. I would recommend replacing the seal yourself to avoid the labor costs. It's a simple repair job and you can find the part you need at repairclinic.com as item #722572. Just type in your model number in the search menu. It costs about $15. I hope this helps you.

One more thing...if you are in the habit of washing small loads in your Calypso that could possibly causing some extra splashing due to the action of the nunater (that's the thing in the bottom of the wash tub that takes the place of the agitator). This washer was made for large capacities and tends to work better with larger loads (so I'm told). Sometimes running it with small loads can cause out of balance issues and water splashing over the sides of the tub. The Whirlpool Cabrio can experience the same problem. Just some extra food for thought...Keep me posted and let me know if you need further assistance

Part 722572 is not the correct part. 722572 is the straight 21" seal on the front of the lid. You need to round lid seal, which is about 50" and I cannot find anywhere on the internet. It is like they want you to buy the entire lid which is not cheap. I put a 1/4" nylon rope under the seal. I melted the ends together so that it would not fall out. This pushes the seal out. It appears to be working so far. I may go and buy a weather seal that has self adhesive if this rope stops working.

It appears that you cannot purchase the lid seal by itself. The seal is part of the inner lid and sold as an assembly for between $120 to $170. I am going to buy a 1/4" round weather stripping and stick it under the inner lid seal. But right now the nylon rope is working. It is pushing the seal outward, which is allowing the seal to press against the metal lip.

If the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Replace the lid switch with this part.

Calypso washer error codes

The OB indicates and out of balance condition has been detected by the motor control. You say this happens when the washer is empty also. One thing about the OB error is that the lid must be opened to clear the error and allow the washer to advance to the next part of the cycle. If the lid is not opened to adjust the clothes then the OB error will happen again.

If the OB error was cleared and the OB occurs with an empty load then the motor control has failed.

The drain pump must work. The image below shows how to run a diagnostic test to check the drain pump. Follow the instructions in the image below and check the drain pump operation. If the pump runs and the water does not drain then the sump is clogged. If the pump hums but does not run then the pump needs to be replaced.

Maytag top loading washer will not agitate

My rule of thumb: Take what you paid for the washer new and divide by number of years without repairs. That is your cost per year for the washer. If the repair will get you another year and is less than the number above do the repair. If you have done more than 2 major repairs in a year it is time to think new. eric

Water dumps on clothes when opening the lid.

It sounds like the seal is loose (worn out) or damaged in any case....not sealing. Calypso's splash a lot and when bleach is used regularly they corrode quickly. To replace the seal you have to get a whole inner lid assy. I also advise not using bleach or at least not regularly.

Kennmore top load washer mdl#11020712990 is not draining the water.

A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, repairclinic.com or appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All three sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all three for the best price. If you still need assistance, please contact me and let me know. If my diagnosis is not correct, please post back and elaborate a bit more so I can assist you further. If your washer is not configured this way, or if you still have questions, please let me know.
NOTE: If your washer still goes through the normal cycles like it should (i.e., agitates, spins, etc.) and simply won't drain, you may have a drain pump clog, or in the drain lines somewhere. Verify your lid switch, first.
