Question about IBM ThinkPad T41 Notebook

2 Answers

IBM ThinkPad When I turn on my computer it goes through a weird setup where it counts the RAM and has an option of either Temporary boot or Setup. After you get past the windows download with a full battery it just suddenly turns off Whenever I power on the IBM T41 the computer freezes at the IBM Thinkpad screen and never opens window XP. The computer has been left on for hours and windows never starts. I have tried numerous times and still no help.

it's most likely that you'll need to re install from the installation disk. There appears to be a corrupted file in your system folders, and a re install should handle this. Try that , and let us know how it works. Your data on the drive SHOULD be safe.

Entering m100 bios

Two different problems stated, answering in order;

1) "entering Neoware m100 BIOS"

That would be HP Neoware m100 Mobile Thin Client, Notebook PC.

Do to the two statements back to back like that, I feel I need to explain a few things.

If not then ignore, and come back in a Comment; and set me straight.

BIOS
Basic Input/Output System.
A small program.
Used to be 64KiloByte in size, (64KB), but believe smaller now; plus it's smaller in size for a laptop anyway. (Believe 4KB)

When you press the Power On button, the plastic Power On button presses against a carbon contact switch.

The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.
Touches (Contacts) BRIEFLY, then opens back up.

Power is initiated to the motherboard.

The first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
The Basic Input/Output System program is initialized.

BIOS looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on; and hands the computer over to the Operating System.
(Windows)

The BIOS program has a BIOS Setup utility. Most of the time just referred to as BIOS Setup.
In the old days was referred to as CMOS Setup.

B) To enter BIOS Setup (utility), watch the bottom of the monitor screen, CLOSELY; after you press the Power On button.

The proper key to press to enter BIOS Setup; will be shown.
This window often goes by F-A-S-T!
Keep your peepers glued to the screen.
Write the key down.

2) Windows does NOT like having the same build of Windows, put over it. Does not like lesser versions being put over it either.
Do to this you have to force it.

Go into BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options; set the first boot device to CDROM.

This way when you put the O/S disk in the optical drive, it forces the computer to boot from the disk.

HOWEVER, things change when trying to put WinXP over Vista, or Win7.

Awaiting reply, please post back in a Comment.

joecoolvette

SATELLITE U205 ....IS ITPOSSIBLE TO BOOT FROM AN EXTERNAL USB DVD DRIVE

Shut your computer down and remove the power cord.

Replace the power cord and press the "Power" button to restart it.

Watch the screen carefully for a message about computer setup.

Most computers use one of the function keys, which are aligned across the top of the keyboard, to access the computer's setup utility, but each manufacturer uses a different key.

For instance, HP computers generally use the F1 or F10 keys, while many Dell computers use the F12 key.

Press the appropriate function key to enter the computer's setup program, then scroll through the list of options until you see "Boot Order."

The exact location of the boot order option varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it is often located under the Advanced menu.

Highlight the "USB Devices" option and press the up arrow key until that device is first on the boot order list.

This will force the computer to look at the external DVD drive first when it boots up.

Use the "Esc" key to exit the setup menu. Choose the "Save settings and exit" option and allow the computer to reboot.

It will now boot from the external DVD drive.

Hope this helps

Did you reinstall windows? If not, you need to put an operating system disk in the cd drive and boot from it and reinstall windows.

If you don't get an option to Press Any Key to Boot From CD message then turn the computer off and restart it and watch the screen for which key it says to hit to Change the Boot Order or Boot Sequence. Hit that key when you see the message otherwise it will not work and you will have to reboot. This is a temporary fix that will work that this boot cycle.

If you want to make a permanent change to the boot cycle or boot sequence you have to turn the computer off then turn it on and watch for which key it says to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup. You have to hit that key when you see the message or it will not work and you'll have to start over. Once inside the Bios or System Setup got the the Boot Tab so you can change the boot order or boot sequence. Normally you want it to boot from the CD drive 1st and the Hard Drive 2nd. With this setup just make sure when you boot the computer that you don't have a music cd or movie dvd in the drive or it will try to boot from it and give you an error message.

Try using the Windows operating system reinstall cd and perform a repair installation.

Boot up the computer using the operating system reinstall cd, press F12 and select the cd/dvd drive

When setup loads, and you go to install windows, you can press R to repair the current installation

Dell Inspiron 1420 will no longer boot

you need to enter setup by tapping one of the f keys or the delete key. i'm not sure which it is for this model. when you enter the bios setup change the boot order to boot to the dvd first. hit f10 and save the change then reboot with your install disk in the drive. it should start installing.

Stopping at the BIOS Splash screen

Hi

Reseat all the RAM, CMOS battery and any PCI graphics cards and then try to boot the computer.

Also remove all the memory cards and then turn on the computer. If you dont get any beep sounds, then it is a problem with 1 or more RAM cards.
Then alternatively try with 1 RAM at a time in different slots and check if it is a problem with any of the RAM cards or the RAM slots.

It sounds like a failing hard drive:

You can get hard drive testing software here:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Get the ISO download on that page. If you need to know how to burn the ISO to CD properly look here:

http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm

IF it keeps shutting off even while testing let me know.!
