My GE Microwave make noice when heating up

  • keddp Dec 07, 2008

The microwave started like normal, but after about 5 seconds it started to make a loud humming sound, then made a little popping sound and had an electrical smell. Could this be a manufacture's defect with a product recall?

when the door is closed it makes a buzzing noise, the micro still works and the noise goes away when turned on and used

  • miladykim May 16, 2009

My microwave (GE Profile Spacemaker LX1800) also makes a noise and has a slight electrical burning smell.  This usually only happens when there is a little item in the oven.  Such as a bag of popcorn or bite sized items.  Larger items cook fine and no noise is heard.

I have a GE counter top microwave oven. When the oven starts cooking (the magnetron turns on) the oven makes a harsh buzzing noise. What is wrong and what should be done?

Mine does loud buzzing too. I have tried moving it, banging on it, I even called GE. They said I shouldn't be using it. Is that a ploy to get people to buy new ones when it isn't truly necessary?

If the microwave works fine it is most likely two interior panels or exterior panels touching. See if you can locate an area stops the buzzing when you push on it. Mine buzzed very loud at start up and I ended up solving it with a small piece of insulation between the outer case and the front bezel. I like the zero dollar fixes.

Interesting as I have the same problem-outer case not as tight fitting as it should be so vibrates and rattles like hell when oven is on. What did you use as the insulation, as obviously I don't want to use anything that might give off fumes or be a melting/fire hazzard.

Im having the same problem with my one year old Spacemaker. Harsh buzzing sound when heating. Though everything works well. I took the grill off the front of the unit that sits over the door, and turned it on --- no buzzing noise. I put it back on and tightened it down with the three screws that attach it --- buzzing noise back again. Not sure what the solution is. The grille part seems fine.

I ended up putting two, one quarter inch, self tapping screws through the bottom, lower side of the microwave. No noise ever again.

You should keep it unplugged until it's fixed. If it's cooking while it should be off, that can damage the oven or even start a fire.

It's either a failed door switch or door switch mount, or a bad electrolytic capacitor on the control board, which we can repair for $39.95.

If you're hearing a fan or motor running, I'd suspect the switch. See this file for help.

If it's a buzz (like a power line buzz) then I'd suspect the board capacitor.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for more help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Magnetron is done. This part heats the food. GE microwaves tend to have them stop working quite frequently. They basically make up the majority of the cost of the microwave, so instead of replacing the magnetron, you would be better off getting a new microwave.

My Microwave is making a loudbuzzer noise when it's on

HI Dianne,
The loud noise you describe can be from two components, I would advice to have the unit checked. The repair could be cheater then replacement, when it comes to microwaves, aftermarket parts are cheaper. I would suspect the magnetron or diode would be the problem in this description you gave above. Some of the GE models had a 10 year warranty on the magnetron, so check your user manual before having the unit serviced, it maybe under warranty for the repair anyways. You can always call GE for a warranty status on your unit as well. Good Luck

GE JVM1650 Microwave Making Loud Noise

hello Frank. Sorry to tell you that the magnetron is going bad and making that terrible noise. Since the inside of a microwave, even unplugged has up to 2000 residual and deadly volts of electricity I recommend either calling a pro or replacing the unit.

Microwave not heating food and is making loud noise.

You have burned out the magnatron (heating element) which is common on GE microwaves. most service companies will charge about 200-250 to replace it

GE over the range microwave making grinding noise

This sounds like the stirrer. If it sticks or stops, the microwaves can damage or destroy it. You may have a bad stirrer or magnetron. There is an important bulletin that covers these problems. To see if yours is covered, see: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf If you need more help, please follow-up.
