Tricks for Keeping SQL Server Safely

Some simple ways to protect your SQL Server database

1. Using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) to assess the server's security
MBSA is one of a variety of Microsoft products, which can scan unsafe configuration tools. It can be run locally; you can also run through the network.

2. Isolate your server and regularly back up
Physical and logical isolation would form the basis of SQL Server security. Database should be installed within the enterprise network security area, but not directly connected to the Internet. Back up all data regularly and store copies in a safe location outside the site.

3. Assign a strong SA password for a SA account
SA account should always have a strong password, even if Windows is configured to require authentication of the server. This will ensure that the server has been reconfigured in the future as Mixed Mode authentication; it will not appear blank or weak SA.

4. Restrict the permissions SQL Server service
SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server Agent is running as a Windows service. Each service must be associated with a Windows account, and derive from this account security context. SA log in SQL Server allows the user (sometimes including other users) to access the operating system features.

Ip address

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the URL web page address bar.
  2. Click on setup>Basic Settings
  3. Check the box labled DHCP.
  4. Make sure that the devices on the network have Obtain IP Address automatically radio button is checked on the network connections.
Now, all the devices are connected to network. Understand the meaning of 'Server'. Any PC can be a server, for that mater most devices can be a 'Server'. The term simply means providing resources like files, folders and printers. However how secure your resources are is determined by the operating system on the PC or device providing resources (printers, files/folders, cameras) . I recommend Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard as a Network Operating System for your PC. This is a very powerful and sophisticated OS and will most likely only be used to its fullest ability by a MCSA or MCP. This is not an OS that can or should even be touched by an average or expert PC user. This OS is intended to be managed by a professional trained and certified to use the OS. Please contact if you have any more questions in this area. This is my area of expertise.

Hi,

I too was facing the same problem as mentioned by you and couldn't connect through telnet localhost 1433.
Solution : Just go to SQL server configuration manager----SQL Server Network configuration----Protocols for SQLEXPRESS and in that right click on TCP/IP and in properties field make all TCP/IP port to 1433 which is blank. Start and Restart the SQL server and you can telnet localhost 1433 and it works. Hope this will help.
