Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

Drive query? i have a seagate freeagent pro drive 500gb. i have it working at home on my pc. i would like to back up the work that is on my mac in the office, however it is only giving me 'read' permission on the drive. i have both read/write at home on the drive when plugged into my pc. i do not want to reformat the drive as it already has 300gb of info on it. what can i do to get write permission when plugged into my mac at the office? thank you neil

there is your issue, if the drive is not hot swappable then you would be at no choice but to reformatt the drive for use on your pc platform.

For a MAC to use an external Hard drive, the hard drive has to be formatted FAT32 file system. That is the only file system MAC sees.

Seagate free agent doesn't store documents on either mac or pc. I need to use it to travel from home to work and use interchangeably documents form my Mac at home to the PC at work.

is the a separate power cord , is there a clicking

I have Seagate - FreeAgent Go 500GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive, I formated with MAC now is now detected by my PC. What should I do?


Open up the control panel with the drive connected, open administrative tools and computer management. Select storage and see if the drive is listed there. It will probably let you format it from there.

FreeAgent Drive Manager.app does not see drive-Mac


Turned out to be an easy one!! The Seagate tech had me reinstall the drive manager, and it then worked. But he did recommend using Time Machine, which I have, over their software!

Have you used Disk Tools to see if the drive shows up there?

FreeAgent Drive cannot be Modified?


The problem with the compatibility between your external drive and your mac is that freeagent drives are formatted in NTFS and the Mac uses FAT32. Mac's can read from NTFS drives but cannot write to them. I'm afraid that the only solution is to re-format the drive in FAT32 format if you want to be able to write to it.
