Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 Digital Camera

Sony Cybershot DSC-S45 Reapir

I recently discovered when trying to turn on my camera, that it would not turn on. Its not the AA batteries as I have changed them out a couple of times. I think its the toggle button for the on/off switch. In the past when turning it on, I could feel it press down on and off. It doesn't do that now. Given it was such a inexpensive camera when I bought it two years ago, I would like to find if I could take it apart to inspect/fix the button as opposed to taking it somewhere for repair. What it would cost to have a professional repair it would probably cost the same amount as a newer version today. So my question is where can I go to find a repair manual, or can someone point out how I would open the camera to get to the on/off toggle switch

Hi,

I did have this problem but I had already fixed it myself, You can say it is easy to fix or difficult for it depend on whether you are a handyman or not, it is personal.

First, I don't responsible anything if you want to try it, this is only for you information.

In order to open the the rack which have the word "power" on it, you need to remove the turning knob first, use a butter knief to open it, inside would be a SPRING, it will be easy to pop up, be careful not to lose it, After the knob was opened, you will see a hidden screw to hold the rack, remove the screw. Another screw is at the bottom of the camera, which was right below the usb plug, remove the screw. Now you will be able to push the rack up and remove it, now you can see the broken power button and fix it,

There is trick to repair the button, email me if you want to know

  1. Ensure the camera is turned on.
  2. If applicable, ensure the lens cover has been removed before taking pictures.
  3. Ensure the LCD backlight is turned on by pressing the DISPLAY button several times until the screen appears. NOTE: Depending on the camera model, the DISPLAY button may be labeled as DISP or with a display icon [FIG. 1]. This button could be a standalone button or incorporated as one of the control arrow buttons depending on the model of camera.
  4. If operating the camera with a battery, ensure the battery is fully charged.
  5. Ensure the battery is inserted properly in the camera.
  6. If operating the camera with the power adapter, ensure it is plugged into a working AC outlet.
  7. Ensure no Audio/Video (A/V) cables are connected for viewing pictures on a TV; the LCD screen will not display when an A/V cable is connected.
  8. Perform a reset procedure on the camera.
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. This happened because you are not a camera repair technician. You took a complicated piece of electronic equipment apart without any knowledge of what you were doing. I'm glad that at least, your pics turn out.

Hey Gregorious03,
You could try removing the batteries for at least one minute and then reinserting them, or you could try initializing the camera back to the factory settings under the setup menu. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Battery/power-up problem

For what its worth I had this same problem with both rechargeables and alkcalines. Fresh batteries were rejected after just a few shots and were clearly NOT dead. Solution seems to be either use Sony's NP-NH25 cybershot battery which is made of two AA batteries jointed at the hip or use generic rechargeable NiMh batteries with a capacity superior to Sony's battery (>2500mAh).
