The appliance repair technician just diagnosed the problem for me. He says it's a bad touchpad, and it would cost $257 for him to replace it. Thought I'd share the diagnosis in case anyone else comes upon this thread.

TRY A RESET CODE
Press the "Sani Rinse," "Heated Dry," "Sani Rinse" and "Heated Dry" buttons on the dishwasher's electronic control panel in quick succession to put the appliance in diagnostic mode.
Close the dishwasher door and engage the door latch.
Wait 10 seconds before pressing the "Cancel" button to reset the dishwasher.
Usually Whirlpool dishwashers have a reset code which is pushing the buttons on your dishwasher such as push heat dry, then normal, then heat dry, then normal, within 5 seconds - so push them fast and in that order and wait. It may take a couple of minutes but should reset. If that isn't it, it may be the pump motor not working properly. Also look down into the bottom of the dishwasher and make sure something isn't stuck down into the drain such as a broken piece of glass or a fork. Is there water still in the bottom? It may not be draining so that would suggest it is stopped up. It could be the keyboard but showing power it seems less likely. I don't think it would be the thermal fuse because that usually stops everything including the power light.
I had the same problem with the exact same model - put your washer on the lowest wash setting - press and hold the start button for about 3 seconds. THe washer will run for about 5 seconds and then turn off (do not have the heated dry setting on when you do this).
Turn it off (turn the dial), and then try to re-wash.
I don't know if your dishwasher is the same as mine, but this solution may be what you need. For electronic panel dishwashers made by whirlpool (mine is a whirlpool but with a kenmore name on it), some of them can be reset by pushing in sequence the Heated-Dry button followed by the Normal-Wash button, several times in a row.
that is... Push Heated-Dry, then Normal-Wash, Then Heated-Dry, then Normal-Wash... Repeat until all lights light up.
When all lights light up you can stop. The washer will then take 5-10 minutes to go through a diagnostics cycle, which is about 18-25 steps or so. You can bypass one step at a time by pushing the STart button. This may not apply to your washer, but is pure gold if it does. Good Luck!
