Question about GE DSS25KGT Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

GE GSL25JFR Freezer fan noise.

My GE is 2 1/2 years old and works fine. However, about a week ago, the fan in the freezer compartment started making a soft howling noise (like wind blowing through pine trees). I pulled the unit out and cleaned out all the dust (which was minimal) and then took the ice maker and light housing out of the freezer to get to the source of the sound. I found that the fan in the freezer compartment was making the noise but could not find a reason for it. I did notice that the fan is speeding up and slowing down about every 3-5 seconds. at the higher RPMs is when the "howling" sound is made and the slower speed it makes a humm. Nothing is touching the fan and I don't know if the speed change is normal. The temperature is normal in both the fridge and freezer and everything else seems to be working fine. I am just concerned that this is the beginning of a problem and would like to fix it before it is an issue.
Thanks
Mark

We are having the same problem. Thank you for this tool and the reply. Has anyone replaced the fan and had success stopping the howling?

It is very common for the fan inside the freezer to develop a loud noise as it runs. Its in an environment that is hard on them, cold, wet. Its a small and simple motor, and you are right in believing there will be more problem in the future, as the stator is probably touching the housing. It has a sleeve type bearing, and its probably worn a little causing the shaft to wobble. Eventually it will stop completely and the freezer will get warm.

Loud noise from freezer of GE model GSF25TGTB (Side by side)

Problems not related.  The first is most likely the fan, or possibly water dripping on to the fan and freezing, but usually the noise comes from the fan struggling to run.  The cube problem could be as simple as the ice dispenser being put back in wrong.  There is a metal lever under the ice tray that switches between crushed and cubed.  Make sure it is seated properly.

Loud humming noise as fridge is running

Sounds like the freezer fan is rubbing some wires or possible some foam insulation around the fan. I would look into the freezer compartment fan and go from there. The fan Will Shut off when you open the doors. Let me know how you make out and if you need anymore help.

Thanks,
Bill

GE ADORA DSS25KSRDSS FREEZER FAN NOISE

Unplug your unit and check the fan blade by manually rotating it with your finger, check if the blade is not touching the fan blade frame. Check if the screws are not loose, align the fan blade and re tight the fan blade screws.

GE GSL25JFR Freezer fan noise.

You are correct in believing the fan is going to be a problem. The evaporator fans inside the freezer compartment are common at going bad. I believe it is due to the extreme temperature and moisture conditions inside the application. The noise is the stator or bearing equivalent going out, the speed should remain constant. It may eventually make a screeching noise upon start up, or just lock up completely. The good news is replacements are relatively cheap and easy to find. If you do replace it yourself, make sure the fan blades are blowing in the right direction. If possible, remove the old one and bring it with you to the local appliance parts supplier and he should be able to help you get the right one, it will probably be a kit of some sort with multiple mounting brackets, screws, and maybe even a couple of blades. don't let this intimidate you. Most of this you will not use.

Noise

I believe you will trace this noise back to the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer making the noise. If you agree that the noise is coming from the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer it is not the motor that is responsible. Your model has a Main Mother Board on the outside rear wall of the freezer down low (about 10 screws hold square cover on over board). The Main Board is causing your noisy evaporator fan motor. Use caution when handling any electronic circuit board. Follow antistatic cautions. Static electricity in your body can damage these valuable circuit boards.

Something to check for. Is the top of the refrigerator door lower than the freezer door? If so the ref. light may not be turning off all the time. Pull bottom panel off to expose hinges. The ref hinge should have an adjuster. Adjust door up to be level with freezer.
