It is one of two things, the video cable from the motherboard to the LCD screen might be loose and must be reseated back in position, or the worse scenario the display is bad and must be replaced with a new LCD screen.
Basically you dont need any drivers for the monitor to make it work, as you noticed even if you dont install a driver the monitor will still open for ypu to use it, the problem your facing right now is that the lcd of your laptop might be faulty. the good thing was you can still able to use an external monitor. Just back up the files and bring the computer to a depot so that they can replace the LCD
As you have not exactly stated the model no so I would suggest the followoing
Acer (Aspire, ): Press [F2] or [Del] Immediately After Power Up Acer (Altos 600 Server): Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Esc] or [F1] During Boot (for Advanced Options) Acer (Older PC): Press [F1] or [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Esc] to Access BIOS
Please reply if you require any further information
This is due to the inverter for the backlight, or the backlight itself going bad. You are going to be better off replacing the screen unless you are handy with electronics.
You won't know until you dismantle and remove both LCD screens.
They could have different video connector and power connector for the inverters.
The best bet is to buy a new LCD screen or if the LCD screen is OK but the backlight CCFL lamp is worn out or the inverter is faulty, then the CCFL lamp or inverter can be replaced fairly cheaply.

We discovered the model we received did not have speakers. We are exchanging it for the same model that does. Thank you for your quick response! **** Winey
