If you use the number pad frequently during your daily computer usage, you may want to have the "Num Lock" key enabled when the computer starts up.
You can enable Num Lock automatically in two different ways: one involves modifying a value in the registry and the other requires you to create a small script in Notepad.
Activate Num Lock Through the Registry

ENABLE NUMLOCK KEYS USING REGITRY Check the LED light that indicates whether or not the Number Lock is enabled. If the light is on, press the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard. Look for the light to turn off, signaling that the Number Lock has been disabled. Change your Number Lock status at start up (Number Lock is disabled on start-up by default). Click "Start," then "Run" and type "regedit" to pull up the Windows Registry. Open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\" folder, then subsequently open the "Control Panel\" and "Keyboard\" folders. Double-click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" and change its Data Value to "1," to disable Number Lock on start-up. A value of "2" would turn the Number Lock on after you log in, while a "0" value would result in it turning off after you log in.

CHANGE THE DEFAULT NUMLOCK KEY b> Go to the Start menu. From the Start menu choose "Run." Type in "regedit." Hit "OK" to open the regedit application. This allows you to change your computer's default settings. Navigate to the keyboard's default settings. Using the navigation bar at the left, choose "HKey_Users" then "Default" then "Control Panel" and finally "Keyboard." Look at the right side of the window. On the right are the various default options you can change for your keyboard. Double click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" to change the NumLock default. A window will pop up. Change the NumLock default by entering a 0 or 2 in the "Value Data" field. Enter a 0 to have the NumLock set to off by default. To set the NumLock to on by default, enter 2. Hit the "OK" button to save your changes. Restart you computer. Your NumLock default changes will not take effect until your computer has been restarted.

The Advanced Wireless Settings on a Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G Router allow you to customize different options and optimize your wireless network's performance. Linksys, however, does not recommend changing the advance wireless settings of the router. The current settings have been configured to optimize the router's wireless performance.
Accessing the Advanced Wireless Settings
Step 1:
Access the router's web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
When the router's web-based setup page appears, click Wireless then click Advanced Wireless Settings.

The Advanced Wireless Settings window should appear. Here are some details:

  • Authentication Type
    The default is set to Open System. For the Open System authentication, the sender and the recipient do not use a network key (wireless password) for authentication. For Shared Key authentication, the sender and recipient use a network key for authentication. If you want to use only a Shared Key authentication, select Shared Key.
  • Transmission Rate
    The default setting is Auto. The rate of data transmission should be set depending on the speed of your wireless network. You can select from a range of transmission speeds or keep the default setting, Auto. This will automatically prompt the router to use the fastest possible data rate and enable the Auto-Fallback feature. Auto-Fallback will negotiate the best possible connection speed between the router and a wireless client.
  • Transmission Power
    The greater the transmission power used, the larger the area a wireless network covers. To minimize the likelihood of eavesdropping by unauthorized wireless users, do not use more transmission power than necessary to cover the range needed by your wireless network. Try using the router at different levels of transmission power and determine how much power is needed to reach the wireless client, such as a PC or an access point that is farthest from the router. Then select the appropriate level, Full (Default), Half, Quarter, Eighth, or Min, from the drop-down menu. The default setting is Full (Default).
  • Frame Burst Mode
    Allows packet or information bursting which will increase overall network speed.
  • Beacon Interval
    This value indicates the frequency interval of the beacon. A beacon is a packet broadcast by the router to keep the network synchronized.
  • DTIM Interval
    This value indicates the interval of the Delivery Traffic Indication Message (DTIM). A DTIM field is a countdown field informing PC's in the network of the next window for listening to broadcast and multicast messages. The default value is set to one.
  • Fragmentation Threshold
    This value indicates how much of the router's resources are devoted to recovering packet errors. The default value is 2347 and should remain as such unless you encounter inconsistent data flow. In the event you encounter inconsistent data, only minor modifications are recommended.
  • RTS Threshold
    This value should remain at its default settings of 2346. Should you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications are recommended.
Wireless-G Settings:
  • Authentication Type
    The default is set to Open System. For Open System authentication, the sender and the recipient do not use a network key (wireless password) for authentication. For Shared Key authentication, the sender and recipient use a network key for authentication. If you want to use only a Shared Key authentication, select Shared Key.
  • Basic Rate
    The basic transfer rates should be set according to the speed of your wireless network and the value is set to Default. Depending on the wireless mode you have selected, a default set of supported data rates will be selected. The default setting will ensure maximum compatibility with all devices. You may also choose to enable all data rates by selecting All. For compatibility with products older than Wireless-B devices, select 1-2Mbps.
  • Transmission Rate

The issue or problem is caused by system drive letter has change or a software has changed the default security provider without knowledge of users.

To resolve the issue, change the system drive letter to revert it back to original value, or match the new drive letter to the security provider. If the default security provider has been changed, reset the default security provider in Windows XP by deleting the relevant keys in the registry.

Reset the Default Security Provider in Windows XP
Start the computer. Press the F8 key during startup to start the computer in Safe mode.
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Delete the following registry keys in the Windows registry:HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
Quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Match the Default Security Provider to New Drive Letter
Run Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Navigate to the following registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Defaults\Provider
You will see a few Provider key beneath the branch. In each Provider key, edit the Image Path value to match the new drive letter.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart computer.

Reset the Drive Letter of the System Drive

Use Registry Editor to change the drive letter of the system drive back to its original value. Edit the following registry key to change the value of the system drive:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

where \DosDevices\C: and other values presents the drive letters.

Installation path change


Change The Default Location For Installing Apps -----------------------------------------------
As the size of hard drives increase, more people are using partitions to separate and store groups of files.
XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.
Go to :-
- Start > Run
- Type “regedit” (without “” NOOBS!)
- Go to this directory… HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
- Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default,this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.

Conversion of nemeric value


If you just want to change the format to text in a query, you can use the Str function in your query. In MS Access, in the Field area of your query in Design View, you can type the following:
YourDesiredCharFieldName: Str([YourNumericFieldName]).

On the other hand, if you prefer to convert the data once and for all in your table, you can go to the Table Design View for that Table, change the Data Type of your numeric field to "Text", and close that window to save the changes. This will convert all of your data in that field from numeric to text permanently.
