Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Doesn't automatically dock, can't safely undock...

I hook up my freeagent pro via eSATA to my PC, running Windows XP. When Windows is already running and I turn on the hard drive, it is not recognized until I run the "Find new hardware Wizard". Pretty frustrating.

Furthermore, I never have the option to safely remove/undock the hard drive. This makes me nervous as I obviously don't want to fry it by just unplugging it.

Any ideas?

No, the "safely remove hardware" icon does not list the drive. How can I use the Help screen to disconnect it?

Sure you do..at the bottom of the tray on right, should be a safely remove or add hardware icon. If it's there, then use it..if not, you'll find it through the Help screen.

good for USB too, by the way.

hot swapping is a truly weird way to work with sensitive electronics...

so. this hard drive is not visible to your system..well..only thing to do is to unplug it at the computer side, and take the chance it only kicks the USB port on the computer, instead of at the signal input to the hard drive.

FreeAgent Pro USB broken -- need data from Momentus drive

Momentus is a SATA drive, so you can put it in any PC that has SATA bus to access the drive.
If you can borrow a SATA to USB dock, you can put it in the dock and plug the dock to USB port on a computer to get your data out the drive.
One example for the USB dock is EZ-dock and you can search on Internet for the picture.

Why won't my external hard drive safely eject? I am running Windows 7 Premium.

Hard drives won't safely eject if there's any program working with any files in that hard drive. For example, if you have a word document open from that hard drive, it won't eject.

Computer cannot find external drive

This sounds like it might of formatted the hard drive aswel and now needs partitioning.

Go to control panel then system tools then computer management.

on the left click disc management and see if it shows in this.

if it dont then you need to take the hard drive out of the case, and plug it into the computer inside via the sata cable and partion it in the boot options.

hope this helps

Seagate freeagent pro 500GB power on/off unsure

I believe it's normal as the Freeagent is responding to data on the input (eSata) cable. If you don't like the light always ON, hook it up first via USB to a Windows PC and set the light to "off" and the drive to spin down "never". If the drive loses power, you will have to do the procedure again. Otherwise, the light stays mostly constantly ON and make a nice companion to Tivo lights. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"
