Speed Queen home washer will not spin/drain

Wife said she smell something, took off the front and found a broken belt. Replaced belt from Auto zone, same size and shape. Befoe I closed the front I ran the machine in the spin cycle with no problem. Loaded clothes and washed, time for the drain/spin runs for 2-3 seconds and shuts off. auto reset and runs for the same time limit. Empty the clothes and still runs for the same time. Is the belt too tight? Pump gone? Motor shot? any help would be welcomed

Belt was 1/2 inch too short.....problem fixed

  • r0bert0 Jul 05, 2008

The belt on our speed queen washer broke, we have attempted to replace it, but are not sure how the belt wraps around each of the three pulleys. We have no point of reference, as the belt was off of the pulleys when we removed it from the washer. Any help you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

how to disassemble pump to replace belt

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

I have had a similar belt breaking problem with a coin operated machine. I replaced the belt, but there is an additional problem that is causing the belt to break. It is as though there are bearings that are dragging and causing so much resistance that the belt won't move on the pulleys. Therefore, the motor spins the shaft until the belt burns up and breaks.
As for installation. there is a tensioning roller. The belt goes around the motor and washer pulleys in the grove provided. The belt must also be routed so it pushes the tensioning roller out of the way. It is hard to describe otherwise without a diagram. Condsider:
0 o 0 The belt goes around the outside 0s and under the inside o.
    I hope this helps. :-)

Did a load and went to start a second load, but, instead of starting, the wash light and spin light began blinking and machine would not start. Power cycled several times and tried different different cycle selections all with the same result. Please advise.

It is important to replace it with a belt provided by Speed Queen as it requires a graphite imbedded belt which allows the electric motor pulley to "slip" when it starts to rotate the drum at the start of the spin cycle. As it reaches speed no or little slip occur. Motor vehicle belts do fit but will not "slip" causing the electric motor to over torque during the start up process resulting it to over heat followed by the associated shut down.

My Speed Queen washer (AWS45NW, bought new in 06) will Agitate, but will NOT Spin, so the Dealer's Mechanic came and found the Pump and Belt was bad and replaced them, it still would not Spin so they...

either your 2speed switch/start switch is bad,if the motor will coast freely without the belt on the pulley on the motor shaft,or the transmission is broken (Not Likely) though, and as long as you said the motor will spin with asist,I would replace the motors start capacitor on the frame next to the motor(should have 2 wires to this component to a "black round cylindrical component ( appx 3"-4" long X 2" round and the terminals will connect on one end of the capacitor),if this doesnt resolve your issue, then it has to be the drive motor tightening up on the motor shaft! (BE CAREFUL DISCONNECTING THIS CAPACITOR AS IT CAN HOLD A CHARGE

My speed queen washer made a high pitch noise when spinning. i took the front off and saw the belt was almost cut in half. how do i replace it?

Easy,It just slips over the fluid drive after disconnecting the link to the spin solenoid, then on to the pump pulley.
Adjustment is made by the motor mount.adjustment bolt.
Good luck.

Washing Machine wont drain as well as other problems!

Either the drain, filter, or screen is clogged somewhere. Check belts, pulley, agitator and tub bearings. Refere to this site for more info:

Won't drain - no pumping sounds at all

if agitates an does not spin means is not going to drain, cause for not spinning broken door switch, look an see if you can feel it hanging or loose, if the swtich is broken it will not go into spin mode at all...........door switch is a safety device!

We'll assume no problems with the belt installation - the tensioned idler pulley is pressing against the belt etc.
You didn't say whether it drained out OK or specify what model but it sounds like the brake is stuck or there's something caught in the basket. Try turning the main drive pulley (the one in the middle) Even with it full of water it should turn freely. Take the tub top off and check for foriegn obects stuck between the basket and outer tub. A wire coat hanger works well fro this.

No spin cycle.

Do you hear if motor is running (an humming noise) ?if you can then It sounds like a badly worn belt that slid on the tub (the washer succeed to spin- depending on clothes weight in tub) . Open the rear panel, check for belt status and if it really worn, replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer.
Be aware you should disconnected power cable from the machine before starting work on it.
Come back if you need more help...
